Quick Answer
Store opened tequila upright in a cool, dark place with the cap tightly sealed. It won't spoil like wine, but flavor fades after 6–12 months.
Why Opened Tequila Changes Over Time
Tequila, especially a joven expression like Especial Tequila Joven, is a distilled spirit with high alcohol content, which acts as a natural preservative. However, once opened, exposure to oxygen gradually oxidizes the delicate agave notes and can mute the vibrant character. Light and heat accelerate this process, so storage conditions matter more than you might think.
How Long Does Opened Tequila Last?
For best flavor, consume opened tequila within 6 to 12 months. After that, it remains safe to drink indefinitely, but the taste will be noticeably flatter. Especial Tequila Joven's fresh agave and silky finish are best enjoyed sooner rather than later.
Diagnosing and Fixing Tequila Storage Problems
- Symptom: Tequila tastes flat, dull, or has a noticeable alcohol burn with less agave character.
- Likely Cause: Exposure to oxygen, light, or heat over several months after opening. A partially empty bottle accelerates oxidation.
- Corrective Action: Transfer the tequila to a smaller bottle if less than half full to reduce air space. Store upright in a dark cupboard away from the stove or dishwasher. Always tighten the cap after each pour. Check your tequila every few months; if the flavor has faded significantly, use it for cocktails rather than sipping.
- When to Stop or Choose Another Option: If the tequila develops an off odor (like nail polish remover) or any discoloration, discard it. Otherwise, it is safe to drink indefinitely, but for the best experience, replace opened bottles after 12 months.
