Quick answer
Use a changing pad to create a clean, stable surface for every diaper change. Always keep one hand on your baby, and clean the pad after each use.
Why a changing pad matters for safety
A changing pad provides a cushioned, washable surface that protects your baby from hard or unsanitary surfaces. It also helps contain messes and makes cleanup faster.
Choosing the right pad for your needs
For home use, a contoured pad with raised edges adds security. For travel, a lightweight, foldable pad like the Portable Large Changing Pad in Solid Grey works well. It is soft, easy to wipe, and fits in a diaper bag.
Step-by-step guide for safe diaper changes
- Prepare your station: Place the changing pad on a flat, stable surface. Unfold it completely and ensure it lies flat. Keep diapers, wipes, and a change of clothes within arm's reach. Never leave your baby unattended on the pad, even for a second.
- Secure your baby: Lay your baby on the pad with their head near the top edge. Keep one hand on them at all times. If the pad has a safety strap, use it, but never rely on it alone. Always maintain contact with your baby. Straps are not a substitute for supervision.
- Perform the diaper change: Remove the dirty diaper and clean your baby thoroughly. Lift their legs gently by the ankles. Slide the fresh diaper underneath, then fasten it snugly. Avoid using baby powder or lotions near the diaper area unless recommended by your pediatrician.
- Clean up and store: Dispose of the dirty diaper and wipes. Wipe the changing pad surface with a baby-safe disinfectant or soap and water. Let it air dry before folding or storing. For portable pads like the Comfy Cubs model, fold it neatly and place it back in your diaper bag for the next outing.
