Quick Answer
Binding Eaze is a silicone mat that lets you press binding fabric in one pass, keeping both folds straight and your iron clean.
Why Use a Dedicated Binding Tool
Pressing quilt binding by hand or with a makeshift guide often leads to uneven folds and burned fingers. A silicone mat like Binding Eaze solves both problems: its patented design holds the fabric in a precise channel while protecting your ironing surface.
The mat’s pink/orange silicone resists heat up to 500°F, so you can press without scorching the fabric or the mat. The 10 x 7.5-inch size is compact enough to sit beside your sewing machine but large enough for continuous binding strips.
Step-by-Step Binding Eaze Instructions
- Prepare Your Binding Strip: Cut and sew your binding strips into one continuous length. Press the seam allowances open or to one side. Fold the strip in half lengthwise, wrong sides together, and press lightly with your iron. A common mistake is skipping the initial fold—without it, the mat can't create both creases at once.
- Position the Binding Eaze Mat: Place the mat on your ironing board with the channel facing up. Set your iron to a cotton or medium-high setting (no steam). Check that the mat is flat and not curled at the edges; a curled mat can cause uneven folds.
- Feed the Binding into the Channel: Insert the folded binding strip into the open end of the mat’s channel, with the raw edges aligned toward the center of the mat. Pull about 6 inches through so the tip emerges from the other side. If the binding jams, your strip may be too wide or the fold is not straight—re-press and try again.
- Press the Binding: With the iron resting on the mat, slowly pull the binding strip through the channel. The mat creates a crisp crease on both the fold and the raw-edge side simultaneously. Move the iron in a steady glide; pausing too long can mark the silicone. Use a dry iron only.
- Trim and Attach: Once pressed, trim any uneven ends. Attach the binding to your quilt using your preferred method—machine stitch or hand sew. The pre-pressed crease will guide your fold at the corners. For mitered corners, stop stitching ¼ inch from the edge, pivot, and continue—the crease helps you fold accurately.
