Quick Answer
The Ibex Kin Single helps children build emotional courage and perseverance through playful goal-setting activities that turn big feelings into manageable steps.
Why the Ibex Kin Works for Goal Setting
The Ibex Kin is designed to support emotional courage—a key skill when children face new challenges or work toward a goal. Its focus on navigating the world and expressing feelings makes it a natural companion for goal-setting conversations.
Unlike reward charts or sticker systems, the Ibex Kin uses storytelling and physical comfort to help children process the emotions behind their goals. This approach builds intrinsic motivation rather than external rewards.
What the Ibex Kin Does Not Include
The Ibex Kin Single does not come with a board book, so you will need to create your own story or use the free Emotional Courage Resources from Slumberkins. The affirmation card style may vary, which adds a small surprise element but does not affect the activities below.
4 Steps to Set Goals with the Ibex Kin
- Introduce the Ibex as a Courage Buddy: Sit with your child and hold the Ibex Kin. Explain that this little ibex loves to climb high mountains, and every climb starts with one small step. Ask your child to choose one goal they want to work on—like tying shoes, trying a new food, or speaking in front of class. Keep the goal simple and child-led. A common mistake is choosing a goal that is too big or parent-driven.
- Break the Goal into Tiny Steps: Using the Ibex as a visual helper, draw or write 3–5 small steps on sticky notes. For example, if the goal is to tie shoes: step 1—hold the laces, step 2—make an X, step 3—pull tight. Let your child place each sticky note on the Ibex as they complete it. Check that each step is truly doable in one sitting. If your child gets stuck, shrink the step further.
- Celebrate Emotional Courage, Not Just Success: When your child completes a step, use the Ibex to talk about how they felt: brave? nervous? proud? The Ibex Kin's focus on emotional courage means you can celebrate the effort and feeling, even if the step wasn't perfect. Avoid praising only the outcome. A child who tries but fails still showed courage—acknowledge that.
- Review and Reset with the Affirmation Card: At the end of the week, sit with the Ibex and the affirmation card. Read the card together and ask your child what they learned about themselves. If the goal is unfinished, adjust the steps and start again. The Ibex stays as a reminder that courage is ongoing. If your child feels discouraged, remind them that even the ibex slips on rocks sometimes—it gets back up.
