Quick Answer

An immersion heater lets you boil water in any mug or cup for hot coffee, tea, or soup wherever you have an electrical outlet. The Lewis N. Clark Immersion Heater works on both 120V and 240V systems and includes a European plug adapter, making it a practical companion for international travel.

Why Pack an Immersion Heater Instead of a Travel Kettle

A travel immersion heater is smaller and lighter than a portable kettle, fitting easily into a carry-on or backpack. It also requires no extra cup — you use whatever heat-safe mug or container you already have in your hotel room or at the airport lounge.

The trade-off is that heating takes a few minutes longer than a kettle, and you need to keep the heating element fully submerged to prevent damage or overheating.

How to Use an Immersion Heater for Hot Drinks on the Go

  1. Choose a Heat-Safe Container: Use a ceramic, glass, or stainless steel mug that can withstand boiling water. Avoid thin plastic or paper cups. The container must be deep enough to fully submerge the heating coil — at least 2 inches of water above the coil. If the coil touches the sides or bottom of a metal cup, it may short-circuit. Stick to ceramic or glass when possible.
  2. Fill and Submerge Correctly: Fill the container with enough tap or bottled water to cover the coil completely. Never plug in the heater before it is submerged. Insert the heater into the water first, then plug it into the outlet. Running the heater dry for even a few seconds can burn out the element. Always submerge before plugging in.
  3. Select the Right Voltage and Adapter: Check your location’s voltage. In North America (120V), the heater will heat more slowly. In Europe (240V), it will boil faster. Use the included European adapter where needed. For other plug types, you may need a separate travel adapter. Never force a plug into a mismatched outlet. If the prongs don’t fit, use an adapter — do not bend the prongs.
  4. Heat and Monitor: Plug the heater in and wait 3–5 minutes for the water to reach a rolling boil. Do not leave it unattended. Once boiling, unplug the heater before removing it from the water. Set a timer on your phone so you don’t forget the heater is on. The metal coil stays hot for a minute after unplugging — rest it on a napkin or coaster.
  5. Add Your Drink and Enjoy: Pour hot water over instant coffee, tea bags, or soup mix. Stir and let steep. The heater itself does not flavor the water, so your drink tastes exactly as expected. Let the water cool slightly before adding instant coffee to avoid bitterness — 185°F is ideal for most instant coffees.
