How to paint with Speedpaint Markers
- Prime your miniature: Apply a light coat of primer (spray or brush-on) and let it dry completely. The marker paint adheres best to a matte primed surface. Skipping primer can cause the paint to bead up or chip off later.
- Shake the marker and test on scrap: Shake each marker for 10–15 seconds with the cap on. Press the tip on a piece of paper until paint flows evenly. A dry tip will skip and leave streaks. If the marker seems dry, store it tip-down for a few minutes before testing again.
- Apply paint in thin layers: Touch the tip to the model and pull in one direction. Let the first layer dry for 30–60 seconds before adding a second. Two thin coats give solid coverage without obscuring detail. Pressing too hard or applying one thick coat will fill in fine sculpted lines.
- Blend colours while wet: To create a gradient, apply two colours side by side on the model and use a clean finger or a dry brush to feather the edge before the paint dries. Work on one small area at a time. Speedpaint dries fast—you have about 10–15 seconds to blend before it sets.
- Seal the finished miniature: Once all paint is dry (wait at least 1 hour), spray or brush on a matte varnish. This protects the paint from rubbing off during handling and play. Gloss varnish will change the finish; use matte to keep the original look.
