Quick answer

Installing a door handle lock takes under a minute with no tools. The BABYGO® Door Handle Lock slides onto standard lever handles and locks with a simple mechanism that adults can release easily.

Why a door handle lock works better than a gate

Door handle locks are ideal for rooms you want to keep off-limits—like a home office, laundry room, or guest bathroom—without blocking the doorway with a gate. They work on standard lever handles and let adults pass through normally while preventing toddlers from turning the handle.

What to check before you start

Measure your door handle. The BABYGO® Door Handle Lock fits standard lever handles (typically 4-6 inches long). If your handle is round, oversized, or a knob, this lock won't fit. Also check that the handle is horizontal when at rest—some spring-loaded handles require a different solution.

Step-by-step installation

  1. 1. Position the lock on the handle: Hold the BABYGO® Door Handle Lock so the U-shaped opening faces downward. Slide it onto the lever handle from the side, pushing it all the way back until it rests against the door plate. Common mistake: sliding it on upside down. The lock should sit flush against the door, not at an angle.
  2. 2. Align the locking tab: Rotate the lock so the sliding tab points toward the door frame. The tab should be positioned so that when you slide it, it catches the handle and prevents it from turning downward. Checkpoint: If the tab doesn't catch, the lock is too far forward. Slide it back until the handle cannot be pushed down.
  3. 3. Test the lock from both sides: Close the door and try to turn the handle from the outside. It should not move. Then open the lock by sliding the tab back and confirm the handle turns freely. Repeat from the inside of the door. Common mistake: forgetting to test the inside handle. A toddler left in the room could lock themselves in if the lock works only from one side.
  4. 4. Remove and store the lock when not needed: To remove, simply slide the lock off the handle. Store it in a drawer or on a hook near the door so it's easy to put back when guests leave or when you need to secure the room again. Checkpoint: If the lock feels loose after removal, check that the handle hasn't shifted. Reinstall only when the handle is in the neutral horizontal position.
