For fans of horror cinema, few icons are as instantly recognizable as Jason Voorhees from the Friday the 13th franchise. With his hockey mask and imposing presence, he has become a staple in the world of collectibles. Mondo, known for its premium vinyl figures and screen-printed posters, has released a new addition to their Mondoid line: the Jason Voorhees Mondoid vinyl figure. This review takes an in-depth look at this collectible, examining its design, build quality, and overall value for both die-hard fans and casual collectors.
Jason Voorhees Mondoid vinyl figure
As a dedicated collector myself, I've seen countless interpretations of Jason over the years, from NECA's highly detailed figures to Funko's stylized Pop! vinyls. But the Mondoid line from Mondo offers a unique blend of retro-inspired design and modern craftsmanship that sets it apart. In this article, I'll share my hands-on experience with the Jason Voorhees Mondoid figure, covering everything from packaging to poseability, and help you decide if it deserves a spot on your shelf.
Unboxing and First Impressions
The Jason Voorhees Mondoid vinyl figure arrives in Mondo's signature window box, allowing you to see the figure without opening it. The packaging is sturdy and collector-friendly, with a striking design that features the character's iconic hockey mask on the front. Upon opening, the figure is securely held in place with plastic inserts, ensuring it arrives in pristine condition.
The first thing you'll notice is the figure's size and weight. Standing at approximately 10 inches tall, it has a substantial presence that feels premium in hand. The Mondoid style is characterized by a slightly exaggerated, cartoonish look, but it still captures Jason's menacing aura perfectly. The paint application is clean and precise, with no sloppy overspray or missed details. The iconic mask is painted with a weathered, battle-worn finish that adds to the authenticity.
- Window box packaging with striking artwork
- Approximately 10 inches tall
- Premium feel with clean paint application
Design and Sculpt Details
The Mondoid line is known for its unique take on classic characters, and Jason is no exception. The figure features a stylized, chunky sculpt that harkens back to the retro action figures of the 1980s, but with a modern twist. The proportions are exaggerated, with broad shoulders and a thick torso, giving him an imposing silhouette. The details are surprisingly intricate for a stylized figure, from the folds in his overalls to the texture on his gloves.
One of the standout features is the interchangeable head. The figure comes with two heads: one with the iconic hockey mask and one unmasked, revealing Jason's disfigured face. This adds a great display option and allows you to switch between the classic look and a more gruesome appearance. The unmasked head is particularly well-executed, with detailed scarring and a menacing expression that captures the character's tragic backstory.
- Interchangeable masked and unmasked heads
- Stylized retro-inspired sculpt with modern details
- Exaggerated proportions that capture Jason's menace
Articulation and Stability
While vinyl figures often prioritize aesthetics over articulation, the Jason Voorhees Mondoid figure offers a decent range of movement. The head can rotate and tilt, allowing for dynamic angles, and the arms are articulated at the shoulders and elbows, enabling you to pose him holding his signature machete. The legs have limited movement, but they're sufficient for stable standing poses.
The figure comes with a machete accessory that fits snugly in his hand. The paint on the machete is metallic and looks great. However, the articulation is somewhat limited compared to other collector figures, which might be a drawback for those who enjoy highly poseable action figures. But for a display piece, the included articulation is more than adequate.
- Articulated head, shoulders, and elbows
- Includes machete accessory
- Stable standing pose
Comparison with Other Horror Vinyl Figures
When compared to other horror vinyl figures on the market, the Jason Voorhees Mondoid stands out for its unique style and high-quality construction. While NECA offers more detailed and articulated figures, the Mondoid's retro charm is a refreshing change. It also pairs well with other Mondoid figures, making it a great addition to a themed collection.
If you're a fan of horror collectibles, you might also appreciate Mondo's other offerings, such as the dracula-406195">dracula-406194">dracula-durieux-406206">Dracula – Durieux poster, which showcases the brand's commitment to high-quality horror art. Value for Collectors
The Jason Voorhees Mondoid vinyl figure is priced in the premium range, but it justifies its cost with excellent design, packaging, and overall quality. For collectors who appreciate the Mondoid aesthetic, it's a must-have. The interchangeable heads add value, and the figure's size makes it a focal point in any display.
In terms of investment potential, Mondo figures tend to hold their value well, and limited runs often sell out quickly. If you're a fan of Friday the 13th or just love well-crafted vinyl figures, this is a worthy addition to your collection. Plus, it makes a great gift for horror enthusiasts.
