Quick answer
The Just Coffee Expansion is a small, low-cost add-on that mixes six coffee-themed desserts and four new characters into Just Desserts, giving the base game more variety without changing how it plays. If you already enjoy Just Desserts and want more ingredient and character combinations, it is an easy yes. If you are looking for a standalone game or a chaotic rule-changer, choose Fluxx Special Edition or Fluxx Dice Expansion instead.
Just Desserts
What the Just Coffee Expansion actually adds
This is not a standalone game. The expansion assumes you own Just Desserts and simply adds a new type of ingredient, coffee, featured in six new desserts, plus four new characters who react to the new menu items. That means the expansion changes the card mix rather than the core rules: you still play desserts to satisfy customers, but now coffee can appear as a required ingredient and the new characters give you more options for scoring or blocking.
How it compares to Drinking Fluxx and Fluxx Dice Expansion
Drinking Fluxx is a full adult party game with changing rules and a drinking theme, but the catalog notes that you do not need to drink alcohol to play. It is a standalone experience, not an add-on. Fluxx Dice Expansion, by contrast, is a small add-on like Just Coffee, but it changes every turn by having you roll dice to determine how many cards you play and draw. So the real comparison is about what kind of variety you want: new content for an existing game (Just Coffee), a new social party game (Drinking Fluxx), or a mechanical twist for any Fluxx edition (Fluxx Dice Expansion).
What you give up with a small expansion
Just Coffee does not add new rules or a new way to play. If your group has already memorized the Just Desserts deck, the expansion will feel like a fresh coat of paint rather than a new engine. It also does not work with other Fluxx games; it is tied to Just Desserts. And because the catalog does not list a player count or playtime for this expansion, you should treat it as an addition to the base game's existing numbers rather than a standalone option.
Practical buying advice
At a catalog price of USD 3.75 (compared to USD 5.00), Just Coffee is an inexpensive way to extend a game you already like. If you are new to Looney Labs card games and want a complete experience, start with Fluxx Special Edition instead: it is designed as an introduction to the Fluxx line and includes two Friends and Ice Cream cards. If you already own Just Desserts and play it regularly, Just Coffee is the better small purchase. If you want a party game for adults, Drinking Fluxx is the stronger fit.
Trade-offs at a glance
- Just Coffee Expansion: Adds six coffee desserts and four characters to Just Desserts. Low price, but no new rules and no standalone play. Best if you already own and enjoy Just Desserts.
- Drinking Fluxx: A standalone adult party game with ever-changing rules. Works without alcohol, but it is a full game, not an add-on. Choose this for adult game nights, not for expanding Just Desserts.
- Fluxx Dice Expansion: Adds dice-rolling to any Fluxx edition, changing how many cards you play and draw each turn. Requires a base Fluxx game. Pick this if you want a mechanical twist for a Fluxx game you already own.
Product facts
- Just Coffee Expansion: Just Coffee brings a new type of ingredient featured in six new desserts, as well as four new characters to love (or not) the new menu items. It expands the Just Desserts deck with new ingredient and character combinations without changing the base rules.
- Drinking Fluxx: Drinking Fluxx is a standalone adult party game with rules that are always changing; it is part of the Fully Baked Ideas imprint and you do not need to drink alcohol to play. It is a full game for social groups, not an expansion, so it serves a different purpose than Just Coffee.
- Fluxx Dice Expansion: Fluxx Dice Expansion adds chaos to any Fluxx version by having you roll dice each turn to see how many cards you play and draw; it is not a standalone game. It changes turn structure for any Fluxx edition, while Just Coffee only adds content to Just Desserts.
- Fluxx Special Edition: Fluxx Special Edition is designed as an introduction to the Fluxx line, with four basic card types, no Creepers, no Surprises, no Ungoals, and it includes two Friends and Ice Cream. It is a complete starting point for new players, unlike Just Coffee, which requires an existing game.
