Quick answer
A LifeLink Counter lets you track life totals in MTG Commander and hit points in RPGs with satisfying clicks and no batteries. Set the dials before your first turn, then adjust up or down as damage or healing happens.
Why use a dedicated counter instead of paper or dice
Paper life pads work fine, but they run out of space and can tear mid-game. Loose dice get knocked over or accidentally rolled. A LifeLink Counter stays put on the table and gives you a clear readout at a glance.
The main tradeoff is portability: a counter is bulkier than a notepad, so it's best for home games or sessions where you have table space. For travel, you might still want a backup pad.
How to use a LifeLink Counter for MTG and RPGs
- 1. Set the dials to your starting life total: Rotate each digit wheel to match your starting life (40 for Commander, 20 for standard MTG, or your RPG character's max HP). Most counters have three or four wheels, so you can track up to 999 or 9999 life. Double-check that every wheel clicks into place – a half-turned wheel can show the wrong number mid-game.
- 2. Adjust for damage and healing: When you take damage, decrease the dial by the appropriate amount. When you gain life or heal, increase it. Turn only the wheel that needs to change – you rarely need to spin all three. A common mistake is overshooting the correct digit. Turn slowly and watch the number, not the wheel.
- 3. Reset between games or sessions: After the game, spin all wheels back to your starting total. This prevents confusion if you pick up the counter mid-conversation before the next round. Store the counter with the dials at a neutral number (like 000) to avoid accidental changes in your bag.
