Quick answer
Measure your torso length from the C7 vertebra to the iliac crest, then adjust the shoulder straps and hip belt on the Women's Nero Classic so the load rides close to your body without gaps.
Why fit matters for a frameless backpack
Unlike framed packs that transfer weight to a rigid frame, a frameless design like the Nero Classic relies entirely on how well the pack conforms to your body. A poor fit causes the pack to sag, shift, or create pressure points, making every mile harder. Getting the torso length right and adjusting the straps correctly lets the Ultra 100X fabric and padded hip belt work together to keep the load stable.
What the Nero Classic does not offer
The Nero Classic has no adjustable torso length or load-lifter straps. That means the fit depends on choosing the correct volume option and then fine-tuning the shoulder straps and belt. If your torso is very long or short, the off-the-shelf fit may not work; try the pack with a light load before committing to a long trip.
Step-by-step fit process
- Measure your torso length: Have someone help you find the C7 vertebra (the bony bump at the base of your neck) and the top of your iliac crest (the top of your hip bone). Measure the distance between them along your spine. This is your torso length. Most women need a torso length between 15 and 20 inches. If yours is outside that range, the Nero Classic may not fit well.
- Set the shoulder straps: Put on the pack with a 10-15 lb load. Tighten the shoulder straps so the pack sits high on your back—the top of the pack should be near your C7. The straps should wrap around your shoulders without digging in. If the pack hangs low, your torso length is too short for the pack. The load should feel like it's hugging your upper back, not pulling away from it.
- Adjust the hip belt: Position the hip belt so it sits on your iliac crest, not your waist. Tighten it evenly. The belt should transfer about 20-30% of the load to your hips. If the belt slides down or feels loose, the pack is too large for your torso. A frameless pack shifts more weight to your shoulders than a framed one—the hip belt still helps, but don't expect it to carry the full load.
- Check for gaps and pressure points: Walk a few steps and look for gaps between the pack and your back. If the pack sways side to side, tighten the sternum strap. If you feel hot spots on your shoulders, loosen the shoulder straps slightly and retighten the hip belt. The pack should move with you, not against you. If it shifts more than an inch, restart the adjustment.
