Quick answer
Swaddle your newborn safely by choosing a breathable cotton-mesh blanket, wrapping snugly but not too tight, and stopping when baby shows signs of rolling.
Why breathable fabric matters for safe swaddling
Overheating is a known risk factor for SIDS. A swaddle made from breathable stretch fabric, like 100% natural cotton mesh, allows continuous airflow to help regulate baby’s temperature. This is especially important for newborns who cannot yet kick off blankets.
Step-by-step safe swaddle routine
- 1. Lay the blanket flat in a diamond shape: Fold the top corner down about 6 inches to create a straight edge. Place baby face-up on the blanket with shoulders aligned with the folded edge. Check that baby’s neck and head rest above the fold so fabric stays away from the face.
- 2. Wrap one side across baby’s chest: Take the left corner of the blanket and bring it across baby’s body, tucking the edge securely under the back on the right side. Leave baby’s arms free or inside the wrap based on preference. Make sure the wrap is snug but not so tight that you cannot slip two fingers between the blanket and baby’s chest.
- 3. Fold up the bottom corner: Bring the bottom corner up over baby’s feet and tuck it behind the chest wrap. Ensure baby’s hips and knees have room to move slightly; the hips should not be forced together. Avoid swaddling too tightly around the hips to support healthy hip development.
- 4. Wrap the remaining side and secure: Take the right corner, bring it across baby’s chest, and tuck it under the back on the left side. Check that the fabric is smooth and no loose folds cover baby’s face. Stop swaddling as soon as baby shows signs of rolling over, usually around 2–3 months.
