Quick answer
For SMOG Rise of Moloch, the plastic cog coins offer a thematic upgrade in feel and durability over cardboard tokens, but they cost extra and require the core game. Cardboard tokens work fine if you're on a budget or don't mind the standard components.
Why upgrade from cardboard tokens?
Cardboard tokens are functional but can wear, tear, or get lost over time. They also lack the tactile weight that makes in-game currency feel real. Plastic coins address these issues with a more durable, satisfying component that matches the steampunk theme of SMOG.
What the plastic cog coins offer
The plastic cog coins are a Kickstarter-exclusive accessory for The World of SMOG: Rise of Moloch. They include 20 exclusive plastic coins designed to replace cardboard currency tokens. The coins are themed to fit the game's aesthetic and are more resistant to wear than paper or cardboard.
The trade-off you need to know
The main trade-off is cost versus convenience. The plastic coins add USD 5.99 (catalog price) to your purchase, and they are a pre-order item expected to ship by September 2026. They also require the core game, which is sold separately. If you already have the base game and want a premium experience, the coins are a small investment. If you're just starting or prefer to keep costs low, the included cardboard tokens will serve you well.
Plastic Cog Coins vs Cardboard Tokens: Trade-offs
- Feel and durability: Plastic coins are thicker, heavier, and more durable than cardboard tokens. They won't bend or tear during play.
- Cost: Plastic coins cost USD 5.99 (catalog price) as a pre-order add-on. Cardboard tokens are included with the core game at no extra cost.
- Availability: Plastic coins are a Kickstarter exclusive and require a pre-order with delivery in September 2026. Cardboard tokens are available immediately with the core game. If you want the coins, order now to secure them before the pre-order window closes.
