Quick Answer
The Rock Bag Kit helps you securely hang food and gear on rocky terrain where traditional tree hangs aren't possible. Follow these steps to protect your supplies from wildlife.
Why Rocky Terrain Demands a Different Approach
Standard tree hangs require suitable branches, which are often absent above treeline or in rocky alpine zones. The Rock Bag Kit uses a lightweight Dyneema® bag to toss your line over a rock outcropping or sturdy boulder, creating a secure anchor point without needing a tree.
How to Use the Rock Bag Kit on Rocky Terrain
- 1. Find a Suitable Rock Anchor: Look for a stable boulder or rock outcropping with a lip or crevice that can hold the bag. Avoid loose or sharp-edged rocks that could cut the line. A rounded, stable rock with a clear overhang works best.
- 2. Load the Rock Bag: Place a few fist-sized rocks inside the Rock Bag to give it weight. Don't overfill—just enough to toss the line over your anchor point. Too many rocks make the bag hard to throw and increase the risk of snagging.
- 3. Toss the Bag Over the Anchor: Grip the bag by the drawcord and swing it underhand or sidearm to arc over the rock. Aim for the widest part of the anchor so the bag settles securely. Practice your toss on open ground first to avoid losing the bag in a crevice.
- 4. Secure the Line: Once the bag is over the rock, pull the line taut and tie it off to a stake or another rock on the ground. Make sure the bag cannot slide back off the anchor. Use a clove hitch or trucker’s hitch for a secure, adjustable knot.
- 5. Hang Your Food Bag: Clip your food bag to the line using a carabiner or small stuff sack. Hoist it at least 10 feet off the ground and 4 feet from the rock face to deter bears and rodents. If the rock face is vertical, you may need to tie a counterweight to keep the bag away from the wall.
