Quick Answer
Clean your rooftop tent fabric with mild soap and water, then reapply a waterproof coating as needed to prevent mold and maintain its weather resistance.
Why Fabric Care Matters
Rooftop tent fabric is your primary barrier against rain, wind, and sun. Dirt and tree sap can break down the waterproof coating over time, while moisture trapped inside creates the perfect environment for mold and mildew. Regular cleaning and reproofing prevent these issues and keep your tent comfortable and dry on every trip.
Diagnose and Fix Common Fabric Issues
- Symptom: Water soaks through fabric: If water beads no longer form on the surface, the factory waterproof coating (DWR) has worn off. This happens naturally from sun exposure and abrasion. Plan to reapply a spray-on waterproofing treatment designed for polyester or canvas tent fabric.
- Symptom: Musty smell or dark spots: Mold or mildew has started growing because the tent was stored damp or packed away with dirt and organic debris on the fabric. Clean immediately with a mild soap solution (no bleach or harsh detergents) and dry completely in the shade before storing.
- Corrective Action: Cleaning: Set up the tent fully. Brush off loose dirt. Mix a small amount of mild soap (like Nikwax Tech Wash or a gentle dish soap) with cool water. Use a soft sponge or brush to gently scrub the fabric. Rinse thoroughly with clean water until all soap is gone. Do not use pressure washers—they can force water through seams and damage the coating.
- Corrective Action: Reproofing: After cleaning and fully drying the tent, apply a spray-on waterproofing treatment made for outdoor gear (e.g., Nikwax Tent & Gear SolarProof or similar). Follow the product instructions, applying evenly to the outer fly and all seams. Let it cure for the recommended time before packing. Reproof once a year or whenever water stops beading. Avoid aerosol cans near open flames.
- Stop or Choose Another Option: If the fabric has large tears, ripped seams, or delamination (peeling inner coating), cleaning and reproofing will not fix it. The tent needs professional repair or replacement. Contact ROAM Adventure Co. support for repair options or consider a replacement tent if the damage is extensive.
