Quick answer
The Aquael Shrimp Set Day & Night is a complete nano aquarium that simplifies shrimp tank setup. Follow these steps to get your tank cycled and stocked with healthy shrimp.
Why the Aquael Shrimp Set Day & Night works for beginners
This all-in-one kit includes the tank, filter, and a three-stage Smart Day & Night LED lighting system. That means you don't have to shop for separate components, reducing the guesswork for a first shrimp tank.
The Smart LED offers Daytime, Daybreak, and Night modes. For shrimp, which are sensitive to sudden light changes, the gradual Daybreak setting helps reduce stress and supports natural feeding behavior.
Choosing the right size and colour
The Aquael Shrimp Set Day & Night comes in different size and colour options. For beginners, a smaller tank (around 10-15 liters) is easier to maintain and cycle. Darker backgrounds help shrimp feel secure and make their colours pop.
Step-by-step shrimp tank setup
- Unbox and rinse the tank: Remove the Aquael Shrimp Set from the box. Rinse the tank, filter media, and decorations with dechlorinated water. Do not use soap. Residue from manufacturing can harm shrimp; a simple rinse prevents this.
- Add substrate and hardscape: Lay a shrimp-safe planted substrate (like CaribSea Eco Complete) about 1-2 inches deep. Add driftwood or smooth rocks for hiding spots. Avoid sharp-edged decorations that can injure shrimp or trap waste.
- Fill and install the filter: Fill the tank slowly to avoid disturbing the substrate. Mount the included filter and ensure the outflow is gentle enough for shrimp. A strong current can stress small shrimp; adjust the flow direction or add a baffle if needed.
- Set up the Smart LED lighting: Attach the LED light and cycle through the Daytime, Daybreak, and Night modes to confirm they work. Start with 6-8 hours of light per day. Too much light causes algae; use the Night mode to extend viewing without promoting algae growth.
- Cycle the tank before adding shrimp: Add a dechlorinator and a source of ammonia (fish food or pure ammonia). Test water daily for ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate. The cycle is complete when ammonia and nitrite read zero. Shrimp are sensitive to ammonia; never add them before the cycle finishes, which can take 4-6 weeks.
- Acclimate and add shrimp: Float the shrimp bag in the tank for 15 minutes, then drip acclimate over 30-60 minutes. Release shrimp gently into the tank. Sudden changes in temperature or water parameters can kill shrimp; slow acclimation is critical.
