Quick answer

To win Stay Alive, be the last player with marbles on the board by strategically pulling slides to drop opponents' marbles while protecting your own.

Why slide order matters more than you think

Each slide pull can open new holes or close existing ones. A single move can eliminate an opponent or save your marble from falling. The order of your pulls determines whether you attack, defend, or set up future turns. New players often pull randomly, but experienced players plan two moves ahead.

The trade-off between offense and defense

You can focus on dropping opponents' marbles or on securing your own position. Offensive pulls target marbles that are close to holes, while defensive pulls close holes near your marbles. The best strategy balances both: eliminate a threat first, then reinforce your own marbles.

How to play and win Stay Alive

  1. Set up the board and marbles: Attach the four walls to the board. Each player chooses a color and places all five marbles into the starting positions on the board. The youngest player goes first. Make sure walls are secure to prevent accidental marble escapes.
  2. Pull one slide per turn: On your turn, choose any slide and pull it completely out, then push it back in. This opens or closes holes in that row. Marbles above open holes fall through and are eliminated. Pulling a slide affects all marbles on that row, not just one.
  3. Target marbles close to holes: Look for opponent marbles that are already near an open hole or that will be directly above a slide you can pull. Pulling that slide can drop their marble instantly. Check the entire board before pulling; a single slide can eliminate multiple marbles.
  4. Protect your own marbles: If one of your marbles is near a hole, use your turn to pull a slide that closes that hole or moves your marble away from danger. Defensive moves are often more valuable than offensive ones. Don't leave your marbles exposed; one good opponent pull can end your game.
  5. Plan for the endgame: As marbles are eliminated, the board opens up. Fewer marbles mean each slide has a bigger impact. Focus on the player with the most marbles left, and use slides that affect multiple rows if possible. In the final rounds, a single pull can eliminate the last opponent if you aim carefully.
