Quick answer
The Super Hexagon EP Reissue is a faithful pressing of the game's iconic chiptune soundtrack, offering a tangible way to own Terry Cavanagh's intense audio experience. Before you buy, check the pressing quality, compare prices, and decide if the reissue's value aligns with your collection goals.
Why the reissue matters
The Super Hexagon EP is more than just a soundtrack; it's an integral part of the game's punishing, hypnotic loop. Hearing those chiptune tracks on vinyl adds a layer of nostalgia and physicality that digital files can't replicate. The reissue makes this experience accessible again for both new players and long-time fans.
Pressing and packaging expectations
As a reissue, this release typically mirrors the original pressing in terms of track listing and artwork, but may use different vinyl color variants or updated mastering. While the catalog facts don't specify the exact vinyl weight or color, expect a standard 12" LP that plays at 33⅓ RPM. Be aware that some reissues might use lighter-weight vinyl compared to original pressings, which can affect durability and playback quality.
Price and value comparison
With a catalog price of USD 22.07 (compared to USD 31.99), the reissue offers a significant discount, making it an attractive entry point for collectors. This price difference often reflects the lack of original packaging or limited-edition extras, but for the core audio experience, it represents solid value. Keep in mind that original pressings may still trade at higher prices on the secondary market.
Decision rules for the Super Hexagon EP Reissue
- Check the pressing quality: Look for user reviews or descriptions mentioning vinyl weight, surface noise, and whether it's a standard black or colored pressing. A lighter pressing may be more prone to warping.
- Compare the price to original pressings: At USD 22.07, the reissue is a bargain compared to the original's higher secondary market price. If you only care about the music, this is the better buy. Decide if you need the original packaging or are happy with a reissue.
- Consider your playback setup: Chiptune music can sound harsh on low-quality turntables. Ensure your system handles high-frequency sounds well to fully enjoy the soundtrack's intensity. A decent cartridge and speakers will improve the listening experience.
