Quick answer
Ultimatch is a cooperative card game where players work together to match cards by number, color, or addition as they climb a pyramid. Setup takes under two minutes.
What makes Ultimatch different
Unlike many cooperative games where each player has a hidden hand, Ultimatch asks you to guess what card your teammate needs. You can match by number, color, or even combine colors (yellow + blue = green). This creates a fun tension between playing safe and taking risks.
The game supports 2 to 6 players, but the dynamic changes with group size. With two players, you have more control over the cards you see. With larger groups, communication becomes the real challenge.
How to set up and play Ultimatch
- Shuffle and deal: Shuffle the deck and deal 5 cards to each player. Place the remaining cards face-down as a draw pile in the center. Common mistake: dealing too few cards. Always count 5 per player before starting.
- Build the pyramid: The pyramid has 4 levels. Level 1 needs 1 card, level 2 needs 2, level 3 needs 3, and level 4 needs 4. Draw cards from the pile and place them face-up in each row, left to right. Checkpoint: ensure each level has the correct number of cards before play begins.
- Take turns playing cards: On your turn, play one card from your hand onto the pyramid. You can match by number (e.g., a 5 on a 5), by color (e.g., red on red), or by addition (e.g., 3+2=5). You can also combine two colors to match a third (yellow + blue = green). Common mistake: forgetting you can match by addition or color mixing. These options often save a stuck hand.
- Draw and pass: After playing a card, draw back up to 5 cards from the pile. Then the next player goes. The game continues until the pyramid is complete or the draw pile runs out. Checkpoint: if the draw pile empties, you get one final round to finish the pyramid.
- Win or lose together: If you complete all 4 levels of the pyramid, the team wins. If you cannot place any more cards, the team loses. There is no individual scoring. Remember: you can discuss strategy, but you cannot show your hand to other players. That keeps the guessing fun.
