Quick answer

Use RESTART disinfectant tabs to sterilize equipment and decor after an illness in the aquarium. Drop one tab per 50 liters of water and soak items for a safe, bleach-free clean.

When to use RESTART tabs

RESTART tabs are designed for targeted disinfection after a disease outbreak, not for routine weekly cleaning. They kill bacteria and organisms on equipment, nets, and decorations without the harsh fumes of bleach. Because the formula uses oxygen-based disinfectant and salt, it's safer for aquatic life once rinsed, but you still need to remove all fish and plants before treating any items.

What RESTART won't do

These tabs are not a water conditioner or a treatment for the tank water itself. They work only on surfaces of equipment and decor that you soak. They also won't remove algae or mineral deposits—those need manual scrubbing. If you need a general water conditioner for tap water, look for a separate dechlorinator product.

How to disinfect with RESTART tabs

  1. Remove tank inhabitants and fill a clean bucket: Take the fish, plants, and any live creatures out of the tank and place them in a separate holding container with tank water. Fill a plastic bucket (not metal) with fresh tap water—enough to fully submerge the items you plan to disinfect. Never use a bucket that previously held soap or chemicals; residue can harm your fish.
  2. Add the correct number of tabs: Drop one RESTART tab per 50 liters of water in the bucket. For a standard 10-gallon (38-liter) bucket, use one tab—slightly less water is fine. Let the tab fully dissolve (it will fizz) before placing items inside. Don't over-dose: using extra tabs doesn't speed up disinfection and wastes product.
  3. Soak equipment and decor for 15–30 minutes: Submerge nets, heaters, filters (remove media), gravel, and decorations. Make sure all surfaces are in contact with the solution. Leave for at least 15 minutes; for heavily contaminated items after illness, extend to 30 minutes. Do not soak live plants or beneficial filter media—the disinfectant will kill them too.
  4. Rinse thoroughly with tap water: After soaking, remove each item and rinse it under running tap water for 30 seconds. Shake off excess water. The oxygen-based disinfectant breaks down quickly, but a rinse removes any remaining salt residue. Skipping the rinse can leave a salty film that irritates fish gills when reintroduced.
  5. Air-dry and return items to the tank: Place the rinsed items on a clean towel or rack and let them air-dry completely. Once dry, they are safe to put back into the aquarium. Refill the tank with conditioned water and acclimate your fish before returning them. Make sure the tank water is dechlorinated and at the right temperature before adding fish back.
