Quick answer
Babies slip in the bath mainly because wet skin loses friction against smooth surfaces. A hooded towel with a secure, snug fit helps you lift and dry your baby safely without losing your grip.
Why wet babies are extra slippery
A baby's skin is naturally smooth, and when it's wet, the layer of water reduces friction between your hands and their body. This makes it easy for them to slide, especially if you're using a regular towel that doesn't provide any grip or if the towel is too large and shifts around.
How a hooded towel helps
A hooded towel wraps around your baby's head and body, giving you a better hold. The hood keeps the towel in place, so you can lift your baby out of the bath without the towel slipping off. The soft, absorbent material also helps dry your baby quickly, reducing the time they're wet and slippery.
What to look for in a hooded towel
Choose a towel made from a blend of cotton and polyester for a balance of softness and durability. A one-size-fits-most design, like the Hudson Baby Cotton Poly Animal Face Hooded Towel, works well from infancy through toddlerhood. The animal face hood adds an extra layer of fun and helps keep the towel centered on your baby's head.
Diagnosis: Is your bath towel setup safe?
- Symptom: Your baby feels slippery and hard to hold after the bath, or the towel shifts and falls off.
- Likely cause: Using a regular towel that doesn't stay in place, or the towel is too large or too small for your baby.
- Corrective action: Switch to a hooded towel designed to stay put. Ensure the hood fits snugly but comfortably around your baby's head. Use the towel's fabric to gently pat and dry, lifting your baby with the towel wrapped securely around them. If the hooded towel still feels loose, try a smaller size or a different style with a more fitted hood.
- When to choose another option: If your baby is very tall or heavy for the one-size towel, or if you prefer a towel with built-in grip strips, consider a larger bath towel or a bathrobe designed for babies.
