Quick answer
If you play mostly solo or with two players and want a complete game, Wingspan Asia is the better pick. If you already own the original Wingspan and play with three or more, stick with the original and consider Asia as an expansion.
Wingspan
What Makes Each Version Different
The original Wingspan is a 1–5 player engine-building game where you collect birds to power your habitat boards. Wingspan Asia, released later, is several products in one: it works as a stand-alone game for 1 or 2 players (with a dedicated Duet mode), a card expansion for the original, and even supports 6–7 players when combined with the original game and other expansions. That flexibility is its biggest strength—and also its main source of confusion.
Wingspan Asia includes new bird species from Asia and new bonus cards, but it does not include the original's core habitat boards or dice tower. If you buy Asia as a stand-alone, you get everything needed for a 1–2 player game. To play with more than two, you need the original Wingspan (or another copy of Asia) and the original's components. The original, by contrast, works out of the box for up to five players and has a larger pool of birds from the start.
Trade-offs to consider
- Player count: Asia is built for 1–2 players as a stand-alone, while the original supports 1–5. Asia can go to 6–7 but requires the original game. If you regularly play with 3–5, the original is the simpler starting point.
- Cost vs value: Asia costs $33.30 (down from $45.00) and can serve as a full game or an expansion. The original base game usually costs more but includes more components. Asia offers great value if you mainly play solo or with one other person.
- Component compatibility: Asia's bird and bonus cards work with any Wingspan game or expansion. However, it lacks the original's dice tower and habitat boards. If you want the full Wingspan experience with all components, start with the original and add Asia later.
Product facts at a glance
- Wingspan Asia: Wingspan Asia is a stand-alone game for 1–2 players (Duet mode), a card expansion to the original Wingspan, and supports 6–7 players when combined with any Wingspan game or expansion. You can start with just Asia for solo or two-player sessions, then later combine it with the original game to play with a larger group—no need to buy a second full game.
- Scythe: The Rise of Fenris: Scythe: The Rise of Fenris is the conclusion to the Scythe expansion trilogy and enables two different options for any player count. While not directly comparable to Wingspan, this expansion shows how Stonemaier designs expansions that offer modular replayability—similar to how Wingspan Asia can be used in multiple ways.
