Quick answer
Refill your Zippo when the flame weakens, and replace the wick every few months or when it frays. Use only genuine Zippo fuel, flints, and wicks for consistent performance.
Why genuine parts matter
Zippo lighters are designed to work with specific fuel, flints, and wicks. Generic alternatives may not fit properly or produce a reliable flame. Using Zippo-brand components ensures the distinctive click and windproof performance last for years.
How often to service your lighter
Refill frequency depends on usage—heavy daily use may need a refill every week, while occasional use can go longer. Replace the wick when it becomes frayed, charred, or no longer holds a flame. A good rule of thumb is to inspect the wick every 3–4 months.
Step-by-step refill and wick replacement
- 1. Prepare the lighter: Remove the outer case by sliding it off the inner case. Pull out the chimney (the metal tube around the wick) and the cam (the flat piece that strikes the flint). Take out the old flint and spring from the flint tube. Always work over a clean, flat surface to avoid losing small parts.
- 2. Remove the old wick: Use tweezers or pliers to gently pull the old wick out from the top of the chimney. If it's stuck, carefully lift the wick from the bottom of the inner case using a small screwdriver. Discard the old wick. Don't force the wick—if it resists, check for a kink or debris in the chimney.
- 3. Insert the new wick: Thread the new wick through the chimney from the top, leaving about 1/8 inch (3 mm) protruding above the chimney. Trim any excess with scissors if needed. Ensure the wick sits straight and centered. A wick that is too long can cause uneven burning; too short may not light easily.
- 4. Refill with fuel: Hold the lighter upside down and insert the nozzle of the Zippo fuel can into the fill valve. Press down for about 5–7 seconds until fuel begins to drip from the valve. Wipe off any excess fuel with a cloth. Overfilling can cause fuel to leak when the lighter is upright. A few seconds of fill is usually enough for a full tank.
- 5. Reassemble and test: Replace the flint and spring, then slide the cam and chimney back into place. Put the outer case back on. Wait 1–2 minutes for the fuel to saturate the wick, then strike the flint to test the flame. If the flame is weak or flickers, the wick may be too short or the flint may be worn. Replace both if needed.
