Quick answer
The Architects 2018 KS Promos add five unique player boards and seven new building/card components to Architects of the West Kingdom. This guide explains what each piece does and how to integrate them into your games.
What makes these promos different from standard promo cards?
Unlike a single promo card, this set includes both player boards and building components. The five boards (Lothaire, Clovis, Bertha, Fara, Hugo) give each player a unique starting ability, while the Museum, Crane, Graveyard, Peddler, Enforcer, and Overseer add new strategic options. The set also contains three Raiders promos (Swindler, Trickster, Squire) that work with the Raiders of the North Sea expansion.
Because these are Kickstarter exclusives, they were not available in retail. The components are designed to be mixed into the base game without altering core rules, but some cards introduce new actions or end-game scoring conditions.
Do I need the base game to use these promos?
Yes. The player boards and building components are designed specifically for Architects of the West Kingdom. The three Raiders promos require Raiders of the North Sea to be playable. You cannot use these pieces with other Garphill Games titles without house rules.
Frequently asked questions
How do the player boards work?
Each board gives its owner a unique starting ability. For example, Lothaire might let you start with extra workers, while Bertha could offer a recurring discount. The exact abilities are printed on each board. At the start of the game, each player chooses one board and places it next their player mat.
What does the Museum do?
The Museum is a new building that can be constructed during the game. When built, it typically provides a one-time or ongoing benefit, such as victory points or resource discounts. Its exact effect is described on the card.
How do I use the Crane and Graveyard?
The Crane and Graveyard are additional building cards added to the building deck. The Crane may let you move workers more efficiently, while the Graveyard could offer a way to reclaim lost workers or gain benefits from them. Shuffle them into the building deck at setup. Treat these as regular building cards; they follow all normal construction rules.
What about the Peddler, Enforcer, and Overseer?
These are also building cards with unique effects. The Peddler might allow trading resources, the Enforcer could penalize opponents, and the Overseer may grant extra actions. Add them to the building deck during setup.
How do the Raiders promos work?
The three promo cards (Swindler, Trickster, Squire) are Outsider cards for Raiders of the North Sea. Each provides a special ability when acquired. Shuffle them into the Outsider deck before the game. They are not used with Architects of the West Kingdom. These promos are for Raiders of the North Sea only, not for Architects.
Are these cards balanced with the base game?
Garphill Games designed these promos to integrate smoothly without breaking game balance. However, some player boards or buildings may feel stronger depending on the strategy. If you want a more balanced experience, you can draft boards or remove certain cards after trying them. Consider drafting player boards to reduce variance in competitive play.
