Quick answer
Clean your enteral feeding tube daily with warm water and a clean syringe, followed by a gentle flush to prevent formula residue buildup and maintain patency.
Why daily cleaning matters
Residual formula can dry inside the tube, leading to blockages that require replacement. Daily cleaning also reduces the risk of bacterial growth around the stoma site and inside the lumen.
Low-profile tubes require the same care
A low-profile gastrostomy tube like the MIC-Key® is less cumbersome for active patients, but its internal diameter is similar to conventional tubes. The cleaning principles are identical, though you may need a smaller syringe to avoid excessive pressure.
Daily cleaning steps
- Gather supplies: Prepare a clean 60 mL syringe (or smaller for low-profile tubes), a cup of warm tap water, and a clean cloth. Do not use hot water, which can damage silicone or cause formula to coagulate. Check that the syringe tip fits your tube port without force.
- Flush with warm water: Draw 20–30 mL of warm water into the syringe. Attach it to the tube port and gently depress the plunger over 10–15 seconds. Do not force the water; resistance indicates a partial blockage that needs professional attention. If resistance is felt, stop and consult your clinician.
- Wipe the stoma site: Use a clean, damp cloth to gently clean the skin around the tube exit site. Avoid alcohol or harsh antiseptics unless prescribed, as they can irritate the stoma. Pat dry with a separate clean cloth. Keep the area dry between cleans to prevent skin breakdown.
- Cap and store: Replace the tube cap securely to keep the lumen clean between feedings. Store the syringe rinsed and air-dried for reuse. Replace the syringe every 7 days or if it shows cracks. Never reuse a syringe that has visible residue inside.

-
Low Profile Gastrostomy Tube Kit MIC-Key® 12 Fr. Silicone Sterile: The MIC-Key® Low Profile Gastrostomy Tube is made from high-clarity medical grade silicone for visibility and drapability. Silicone resists formula adhesion better than some plastics, making daily flushes more effective at preventing buildup.
