Quick answer
Set up the Flex Barndoor System by attaching the mounting bracket to your light stand, connecting the Flex panel via touch fastener, then sliding the barndoors onto the panel frame. Adjust the black leaves to control light spill and direction.
Why use barndoors on LED mats and Cine Sets
Barndoors give you mechanical control over the shape and spread of your light. Unlike softboxes or grids, they let you feather the edge of the beam or block light from hitting a specific area without moving the entire fixture. The Flex Barndoor System is designed specifically for Flex 1' x 2' LED mats and Cine Sets, so it fits securely without extra adapters.
The trade-off is that barndoors add some bulk and weight to your setup. If you need extremely soft, wrap-around light, a softbox or diffusion panel may be a better choice. Barndoors excel when you want a harder edge or need to flag light off a background or subject.
What comes in the box
The Flex Barndoor System (1x2) includes the barndoor assembly with four adjustable black leaves, a removable heavy-duty mounting system with a ball head, and integrated handles for transport and storage. The Flex panel itself attaches inside the barndoor frame via touch fastener—no tools required.
Setup steps
- Attach the mounting bracket to your light stand: Slide the heavy-duty mounting bracket onto your light stand's spigot and tighten the knob. The ball head allows you to adjust the angle after the panel is attached. Make sure the bracket is fully tightened before adding the panel—otherwise the assembly may tilt unexpectedly.
- Connect the Flex panel to the barndoor frame: Lay the Flex panel face-down on a clean surface. Position the barndoor frame over it so the touch fastener strips align, then press firmly. The panel should sit flush inside the frame. Check that the fastener strips are clean and free of debris. Dust or lint can reduce adhesion and cause the panel to sag.
- Mount the barndoor assembly on the bracket: With the panel attached to the frame, lift the assembly and align the bracket's mounting plate with the receiver on the back of the frame. Slide it into place until you hear a click, then tighten the locking knob. Always support the assembly with one hand while tightening. The ball head can pivot unexpectedly if not locked.
- Adjust the black leaves for light shaping: Each of the four black leaves pivots independently. Open them fully for a wide flood, close them partway to narrow the beam, or angle individual leaves to flag light off a specific area. Leaves can get warm during extended use. Let them cool before folding the assembly for storage.
- Remove the barndoors for transport: To detach, loosen the locking knob, slide the assembly off the bracket, and separate the panel from the frame by peeling the touch fastener apart. The integrated handles make it easy to carry the barndoor frame separately. Store the barndoor frame with the leaves fully closed to protect them from bending during transit.
