Quick answer
Clean your Skullcandy earbuds weekly using a dry, lint-free cloth and a soft brush. Avoid liquids near the charging ports and never use sharp objects. Focus on the speaker mesh and charging contacts for best performance.
What you need before you start
Gather a dry microfiber cloth, a soft-bristled brush (like a clean toothbrush), a cotton swab, and isopropyl alcohol (70% or less) for disinfecting the outer surfaces only. Do not use bleach, hydrogen peroxide, or any abrasive cleaners. Keep a toothpick handy only for dislodging visible debris from the charging case — never inside the earbud itself.
How often should you clean your earbuds?
A quick wipe-down every few days prevents wax and dirt buildup. A deeper cleaning every two weeks keeps the speaker mesh and charging contacts working well. If you use your earbuds during workouts or in dusty environments, increase the frequency to weekly. The Skullcandy Dime 3 and Dime Evo have sweat and water resistant construction, but that doesn't mean they are washable — always dry them before placing them back in the case.
Step-by-step cleaning process
- Remove ear tips and wipe the body: Take off the silicone ear tips from your Skullcandy earbuds. Wipe the main body of each earbud with a dry microfiber cloth to remove surface oils and dust. For sticky residue, lightly dampen the cloth with water — never apply liquid directly to the earbud. Common mistake: using a wet cloth near the speaker mesh can push moisture inside and damage the driver.
- Clean the speaker mesh gently: Use a soft-bristled brush to sweep across the speaker mesh in one direction. This dislodges earwax and debris without pushing it deeper. For stubborn buildup, gently press a piece of Blu Tack or cleaning putty onto the mesh and lift it off. Never use a toothpick, pin, or paperclip — they will puncture the mesh and ruin the sound.
- Wash and dry the ear tips separately: Rinse the silicone ear tips with warm water and a drop of mild soap. Rub them clean with your fingers, then rinse thoroughly. Let them air-dry completely before reattaching — moisture trapped inside the earbud can cause static or muffled audio. Checkpoint: ear tips must be 100% dry. Putting damp tips back on can lead to mold or bacteria growth.
- Clean the charging case and contacts: Use a dry cotton swab to wipe the charging pins inside the case and the corresponding contacts on the earbuds. For debris in the case crevices, use a toothpick carefully. Wipe the exterior of the case with a damp cloth, then dry it immediately. Common mistake: using alcohol on the charging pins can strip protective coatings. Stick to dry cleaning for electrical contacts.
Cleaning notes for your Skullcandy earbuds
- Dime® 3: Skullcandy's Dime 3 true wireless earbuds come with 20 hours of total battery, a built-in microphone, sweat and water resistant construction, Tile™ tracking technology, and Bluetooth® 5.3 connectivity. Sweat and water resistance helps protect against moisture during cleaning, but you should still avoid soaking the earbuds. The charging pins and microphone port are vulnerable — clean them gently with a dry cotton swab.
- Skullcandy EcoBuds™: From the outset, Skullcandy EcoBuds were designed to reduce our impact at every stage of the process without compromising the sound, the look or the fun. The result is a 50% reduction in EcoBuds’ carbon footprint* plus legendary Skullcandy sound and style. EcoBuds use recycled materials, so avoid harsh chemicals that could degrade the finish. Stick to a dry cloth for the body and a lightly dampened cloth for the ear tips only.
