Quick answer
To inflate your AirFort for the first time, you need a standard box fan (not included) and a clear, flat floor space. The process takes less than 5 minutes once you know the steps.
What you need before you start
Your AirFort comes with the fabric fort and a storage bag. You will need a standard 20-inch box fan (not included) to inflate it. Choose a fan with a flat front and high airflow setting for best results.
Clear a floor area at least 6 feet by 6 feet. Avoid sharp objects, pet hair, or crumbs that could damage the fabric or clog the fan intake. A smooth, clean surface helps the AirFort seal properly.
Common first-time mistakes to avoid
Many first-time users place the fan too far from the AirFort’s intake sleeve. The sleeve must fit snugly over the fan face to trap air. A gap will cause slow inflation or no inflation at all.
Another mistake is using a fan that is too small or too weak. A standard 20-inch box fan is recommended. Smaller fans or tower fans do not move enough air to fully inflate the fort.
Step-by-step: First-time AirFort inflation
- Step 1: Lay the AirFort flat on the floor: Unfold the AirFort completely and spread it out on your clean, flat surface. Make sure the intake sleeve (the fabric tube) is facing the direction you will place the fan. Check that no part of the fabric is bunched or twisted — this can block airflow.
- Step 2: Attach the intake sleeve to your box fan: Slide the open end of the intake sleeve over the front of your 20-inch box fan. Pull the drawstring or elastic edge tight so the sleeve fits snugly around the fan bezel. A loose fit will let air escape. If your fan has a rounded front, use the drawstring to cinch the sleeve as tight as possible. Gaps are the top cause of slow inflation.
- Step 3: Turn the fan on high: Plug in the fan and set it to the highest speed. The AirFort should start filling with air within seconds. Hold the sleeve against the fan if needed until the fort begins to rise. Do not walk away yet. Stay and watch the first 30 seconds to ensure the sleeve stays attached.
- Step 4: Adjust the fabric as it inflates: As the AirFort rises, gently pull any fabric that is caught under the fort or bunched at the edges. This helps the fort take its full shape and prevents air pockets. A fully inflated AirFort should feel firm but not rock-hard. If you see wrinkles, smooth them out by hand.
- Step 5: Secure the fan and enjoy: Once the AirFort is fully inflated, leave the fan running. The fan must stay on to keep the fort inflated. Place the fan in a safe spot where kids cannot bump into it. Never turn off the fan while children are inside. The fort will deflate quickly and could startle or trap them.
