Quick Answer
Installing Porto Safety Rails on a MIK-compatible rear rack takes about 15 minutes. The rails provide secure attachment points for up to two child seats or passenger seats, plus mounts for bottle cages or a lock.
What You Need Before Starting
The Porto Safety Rails are designed specifically for MIK-compatible rear racks. They fit up to two child seats, two passenger seats, or one of each. The rails also accommodate a Eurocrate (600 x 400mm) and include two bottle mounts at the back.
Before you begin, ensure your bike has a MIK rear rack. The rails come with a soft foam cover for passenger comfort. Check that you have the correct size and color option for your bike.
Installation Steps
- Prepare the Rear Rack: Remove any existing accessories from your MIK-compatible rear rack. Wipe the rack rails clean to ensure a secure fit. Common mistake: Forgetting to remove the MIK adapter plate if one is installed. The rails need to sit directly on the rack.
- Attach the Porto Safety Rails: Align the Porto Safety Rails with the mounting points on the rear rack. Slide the rails into the MIK slots until they click into place. You should hear an audible snap. Checkpoint: If the rails do not click, they may be misaligned. Remove and re-align before forcing.
- Secure the Rails with Bolts: Tighten the included bolts to secure the rails to the rack. Use a 4mm Allen key. Do not overtighten, as aluminum threads can strip. Common mistake: Overtightening can strip the threads. Tighten until snug, then give a quarter turn.
- Install Child Seats or Passenger Seats: Attach up to two child seats or passenger seats to the rails. Each seat should click into the MIK mounts on the rails. Ensure they are locked in place. Checkpoint: Test each seat by pulling up firmly. If it lifts, it is not fully locked.
- Add Accessories (Optional): Use the two bottle mounts at the back to attach bottle cages, a lock, or other accessories. The rails also accept a Eurocrate (600 x 400mm) for gear carrying.
