Quick answer
Start with a single herb in a small pinch, observe your pet's digestion and interest over 48 hours, then gradually build variety using a curated set like the Herb Discovery Set – 5 Pack.
Why forage herbs need a slow start
Small pets have sensitive digestive systems. A sudden switch from pellets or hay to aromatic dried herbs can cause gas, soft stools, or refusal to eat. Slow introduction lets the gut microbiome adapt and lets you spot any herb your pet dislikes or reacts to.
Fresh vs. dried: what to expect
Dried forage herbs are more concentrated in flavor and last longer than fresh herbs. This means a little goes a long way—overfeeding dried herbs can lead to picky eating or weight gain. Always store dried herbs in a cool, dry place to preserve aroma and prevent mold.
Steps to introduce forage herbs
- Start with one herb: Choose a single herb from the bundle—such as Red Clover—and offer a pinch (about the size of your thumbnail). Sprinkle it over hay or scatter it in a clean enclosure. Don't mix herbs on day one. If your pet rejects that herb, you won't know which one caused the issue.
- Wait 48 hours: Observe your pet's eating behaviour and droppings. Normal droppings should remain round, firm, and uniform. If you see soft stool, reduced appetite, or the herb is untouched, remove it and try a different herb after a 24-hour break. A pet that ignores the herb may simply dislike the flavour—try a different herb from the set before concluding it's not interested in foraging.
- Gradually add variety: Common mistake: Jumping to a full tablespoon of mixed herbs can overwhelm digestion and reduce hay intake, which is the primary diet.
