Quick answer
Start with the bodysuit or romper as a base layer, then choose the Swaddle Up™ with the TOG rating that matches your room temperature. Use the 1.0 TOG for cooler rooms (68–72°F) and the 0.2 TOG for warmer rooms (75–80°F).
Why TOG matters for your baby's comfort
The TOG (Thermal Overall Grade) rating tells you how warm a swaddle or sleep bag is. A higher TOG means more insulation. Love to Dream's Swaddle Up™ comes in 1.0 TOG (original cotton) and 0.2 TOG (lightweight cotton). Choosing the right one prevents overheating or waking up cold.
Room temperature is the main factor. Use a room thermometer to know exactly what you're working with. A 1.0 TOG swaddle is ideal for typical nursery temperatures around 68–72°F. The 0.2 TOG works well in warmer rooms, 75–80°F, or during summer nights.
What's inside each Newborn Essentials Bundle
The Newborn Essentials Bundle with the 1.0 TOG Swaddle Up includes a romper and a short-sleeve bodysuit, both in viscose from bamboo. The bundle with the 0.2 TOG Swaddle Up includes a bib, wash cloths, burp cloth, and hooded towel instead. Both bundles give you a complete layering system for a newborn.
The romper and bodysuit are designed to be worn under the swaddle. They are snug-fit and made from breathable bamboo viscose, which helps regulate temperature.
Step-by-step layering guide
- Check the room temperature: Use a room thermometer to know the exact temperature. Aim for 68–72°F for most babies. If the room is warmer than 75°F, choose the 0.2 TOG bundle. If it's cooler, go with the 1.0 TOG. Never guess the temperature. A room that feels comfortable to you may be too warm for a swaddled baby.
- Dress the baby in the base layer: Start with the short-sleeve bodysuit or the romper from the bundle. In warm rooms, the bodysuit alone is enough. In cooler rooms, use the romper for extra leg coverage. Both are snug-fit to avoid bunching under the swaddle. Avoid adding extra blankets or thick pajamas under the swaddle. The bodysuit or romper is designed to be the only layer needed.
- Secure the Swaddle Up™: Place the baby in the Swaddle Up™ with arms in the natural arms-up position. Zip up the twin zipper from the bottom for easy diaper changes later. Make sure the swaddle is snug around the chest but not tight—you should be able to slide two fingers between the swaddle and the baby's chest. The twin zipper makes nighttime changes easy without fully undressing the baby. Always check that the swaddle is not too loose, as loose fabric can be a suffocation hazard.
- Check for signs of overheating or cold: After 15–20 minutes, feel the baby's neck or back. If the skin feels sweaty or hot, remove a layer or switch to a lower TOG. If the skin feels cool, add a layer or use a higher TOG. The baby's hands and feet may feel cool—that's normal. Never use the baby's hands or feet to judge temperature. The neck or back is the most reliable spot.
- Adjust for room temperature changes: If the room temperature drops overnight, you can layer the bodysuit under the romper under the 1.0 TOG swaddle. If the room warms up, remove the romper and use only the bodysuit with the 0.2 TOG swaddle. The bundles are designed to be mixed and matched. Keep both TOG options on hand for unpredictable weather.
