Quick answer
Over-Rated™ is a laughter-filled card game where players match ridiculous one-star reviews to the most hilariously wrong location. The funniest pair wins the round.
Why matching reviews is harder than it sounds
The game works because some reviews are so absurd they could apply to almost anything — but the best matches are the ones that feel just slightly possible. A review about a "rude manager" might work for a fast-food restaurant, but it's even funnier when paired with a yoga retreat. The trick is not to overthink; go with your gut laugh and you'll usually land the vote.
How to play Over-Rated in 5 steps
- Set up the decks: Shuffle the Review cards and Location cards separately. Place both decks face-down in the center of the table. Each player should have easy reach of both piles. Keep the decks separate throughout the game — mixing them up will confuse the rounds.
- The judge draws a Location card: One player volunteers (or is chosen) to be the round judge. The judge draws one Location card and reads it aloud to the group. Everyone else keeps their Review cards hidden. The judge should read the location with a straight face — letting the absurdity of the upcoming reviews land on its own.
- Players pick and play Review cards: Each non-judge player draws a hand of three Review cards from the deck. Then each secretly chooses one that they think best (or worst) matches the location. Players place their chosen Review card face-down in front of them. Don't show your choice to anyone — the surprise reveal is half the fun.
- Judge reveals and reads the reviews: The judge collects all face-down Review cards, shuffles them, then reveals each one to the group, reading it aloud. Players can add dramatic delivery or funny voices if they want. Read the reviews exactly as written — embellishing changes the game and gives unfair advantage.
- Judge picks the funniest match: The judge decides which Review + Location combo is the most ridiculous and hilarious. That player earns one point. The judge role then passes to the next player clockwise. Play continues until someone reaches an agreed number of points (usually 5 or 7). There's no right answer — the judge picks purely for laughs, so every round has a different winner.
