Quick answer

Star Wars Don't Upset the Wookiee is a card game where you collect sets of Chewbaccas, clear your hand, or be the last player standing—but each turn you play an angrier Chewie, and if you can't, you're out.

What makes this game different from other card games

Unlike typical set-collection games, Don't Upset the Wookiee adds a rising tension mechanic: every turn you must play a Chewie card with a higher number than the last. This creates a natural escalation that forces players to decide between playing safe or using Action cards to skip, swap, or reset the stack.

The game also has three win conditions—collect a full set of Chewbaccas, clear your hand, or be the last player standing—which means you can adapt your strategy based on the cards you draw.

How to play step by step

  1. Set up the game: Shuffle the deck and deal each player a hand of cards. Place the remaining deck in the center. Each player keeps their hand secret. Check that everyone has an equal number of cards; if not, remove extra cards from the deck.
  2. Start the first turn: The youngest player goes first. They must play one Chewie card from their hand, placing it face-up in the center. The number on that card becomes the current anger level. If you don't have a Chewie card at all, you must draw from the deck—this is a common early-game mistake.
  3. Play an angrier Chewie or use an Action: On your turn, you must play a Chewie card with a higher number than the last one played. If you can't, you may play an Action card instead (if you have one). Actions let you skip your turn, swap the top card, or reset the anger level to 1. Always keep at least one Action card for emergencies; running out of options is the main reason players lose.
  4. Win by clearing your hand or collecting a set: If you play your last card, you win immediately. Alternatively, if you collect all four different Chewbacca cards (each has a unique number), you also win. The third win condition: be the last player still in the game after everyone else has been eliminated. Don't focus on just one win condition—watch which cards other players are collecting and adapt.
  5. Handle the Wookiee's temper: If you cannot play a Chewie card and have no Action card, you are out for that round. Discard your hand and watch the remaining players continue until one winner remains. Being eliminated early is frustrating but gives you a chance to observe strategies for the next round.
