Quick answer
Use the six items in the Montessori Educational Box (13-15 months) one at a time, following your baby's lead, to build fine motor skills, problem-solving, and concentration through open-ended play.
Why Open-Ended Play Matters at This Age
Between 13 and 15 months, babies are natural explorers. They learn by touching, stacking, and repeating actions. The Montessori approach values child-led play: you set up the toy, then step back and let your baby figure it out. This builds focus and confidence.
Each item in the box is made from sustainable, safe materials, so you can let your baby handle them freely. The goal is not to teach but to create an environment where discovery happens naturally.
Step-by-Step Play Guide
- Start with the Flexible Wooden Stacker: Place the rings and base on a low shelf or mat. Let your baby pick up the rings, feel the wood, and try to stack them. The flexible rod wobbles slightly, adding a gentle challenge. If your baby gets frustrated, demonstrate once slowly, then step back. Avoid correcting the order of rings. Let them stack in any sequence—that's part of the open-ended learning.
- Introduce the Shape Puzzle: Show your baby one shape at a time. Place the piece near the correct hole and let them rotate it to fit. If they try to force a square into the circle, simply turn the piece back to the correct orientation without saying 'no.' Common mistake: giving all shapes at once. Offer just one or two to prevent overwhelm.
- Try the Pound Bench: Set the bench on a stable surface. Tap the pegs gently with the mallet yourself, then hand the mallet to your baby. They may pound with their hand first—that's fine. The sound and motion reinforce cause and effect. Checkpoint: if your baby mouths the mallet, redirect by tapping the bench yourself. Mouthing is normal, but the mallet is for tapping.
- Explore the Farm Nesting Box: Take out the smaller boxes and show how they fit inside the larger one. Let your baby try nesting them in any order. You can also hide a small toy under one box for a surprise peek-a-boo game. Common mistake: expecting perfect nesting. At this age, dumping and carrying the boxes is the real learning.
- Use the 4 in 1 Drawer: Open the drawer slowly and reveal what's inside (you can place a small object like a wooden coin). Let your baby slide the drawer open and closed. The resistance helps strengthen hand muscles. Checkpoint: if the drawer is too stiff, loosen the wooden guide slightly. Never force it.
- Read the Play Book Together: Sit with your baby on your lap and turn the pages slowly. Point to simple images and name them. Let your baby touch the pages and turn them at their own pace. You don't need to read every word—following their gaze is enough. Common mistake: reading the whole book. Let your baby decide when to turn the page, even if they skip ahead.
