Quick answer
A canvas needle minder uses a strong magnet to hold your needle against your fabric or hoop, so you always know where it is. Attach it to your canvas edge or frame, then let the magnet grab the needle when you set it down.
Why use a needle minder instead of a pincushion?
A needle minder keeps the needle on your work surface rather than in a separate cushion. That means you don't have to look away from your canvas to find it, and you reduce the risk of dropping the needle onto the floor or into your chair. The trade-off is that the magnet adds a small amount of weight to your fabric, which can pull on lighter-weight hoops if you don't position it near the edge.
How to use a canvas needle minder in 4 steps
- Attach the magnet to the back of your fabric: Separate the two magnet pieces that come with your needle minder. Place one piece on the front of your fabric (the decorative side) and the other piece on the back, directly behind it. The magnets will hold the minder in place through the fabric. Make sure the fabric is flat between the magnets so the minder doesn't slip off during stitching.
- Position the minder near your stitching area: Slide the minder to a spot on the edge of your canvas or hoop that is within easy reach of your dominant hand. For most stitchers, that means the top-right or top-left corner of the frame. Avoid placing the minder directly over stitches you haven't made yet, or it may snag the thread.
- Set your needle on the minder when you pause: When you need to put your needle down, simply lay it on the front magnet. The magnetic pull will hold it securely in place. To release, lift the needle straight up rather than sliding it off. If your needle keeps falling off, check that the magnet pieces are aligned correctly and that the fabric between them isn't too thick.
- Remove the minder when you finish stitching: Gently pull the two magnet pieces apart. Slide the front piece off the fabric, then remove the back piece. Store both pieces together so you don't lose the smaller magnet. Never pull the fabric away from the magnets while the needle is still on the minder, or the needle may spring loose.
