Quick answer

A drawstring threader lets you feed a new or replacement drawstring through a casing or hem in seconds without unpicking seams or wrestling with fabric.

When to use a drawstring threader instead of a safety pin

A safety pin can work for wide casings, but it often slips off thin cord or gets stuck at seam intersections. A drawstring threader has a flexible body and two eye sizes, so it handles narrower openings (1/4 inch or larger) and multiple drawstring thicknesses more reliably. It also reduces the risk of damaging the fabric or losing the string inside the casing.

How to use a drawstring threader in four steps

  1. Attach the drawstring to the threader: Choose the eye that matches your drawstring width. Insert the end of the drawstring through the eye and pull until about 1 inch passes through. Fold the string back on itself and pinch it against the tool so it won't slip out. If the string is too thick for the eye, use the larger eye or trim the end at an angle for a tighter fit.
  2. Insert the threader into the casing opening: Gently push the pointed tip of the threader into the casing or hem opening. Work the tool forward a little at a time, keeping the fabric flat so the tool doesn't poke through the seam. Twist the threader slightly if it gets stuck; forcing it can tear the fabric or separate the tool from the string.
  3. Guide the threader through the entire casing: Continue feeding the threader along the casing path. When you reach the opposite opening, pull the tool and the attached drawstring out together. If the threader exits at a wrong opening, you can reverse it by pulling the tool back and steering it with your fingers.
  4. Remove the threader and adjust the drawstring: Unhook the drawstring from the threader eye. Pull both ends of the string to center it, then tie a knot or add stoppers as needed. Trim any frayed ends before finishing. Test the drawstring by pulling it a few times; if it binds, the eye may have snagged a thread inside the casing.
