Quick answer
To use the Educated Monkey Calculator, simply set the monkey's feet to the two numbers you want to multiply, then read the result from the position of his hands.
Why a mechanical calculator?
Unlike digital devices, the Educated Monkey Calculator offers a hands-on, visual way to understand multiplication. It operates without batteries or screens, making it a durable, screen-free learning tool that feels more like a puzzle than a lesson.
The trade-off is that it only works for numbers 1 through 12, so it won't replace a modern calculator for advanced math. But for early learners, the tactile feedback helps reinforce times tables in a memorable way.
How to use the Educated Monkey Calculator
- Set the left foot to the first number: Gently rotate the left foot of the monkey to point to the first number (1-12) you want to multiply. The foot clicks into place at each number. Make sure the foot is fully engaged; a half-click can give a wrong result.
- Set the right foot to the second number: Rotate the right foot to point to the second number (1-12). Both feet must be set before reading the answer. Double-check that both feet point exactly at the numbers, not between them.
- Read the answer from the monkey's hands: Look at the position of the monkey's hands—they will point to the product of the two numbers. The left hand shows the tens digit (if any), and the right hand shows the units digit. If the hands seem to point between two numbers, gently jiggle the feet to ensure they are seated correctly.
- Practice with small numbers first: Start with simple multiplications like 2×3 or 4×5 to build confidence. The toy's analog nature makes it easy to see patterns. Common mistake: forgetting that 1 times any number equals that number—the monkey's hands confirm this.
