Quick answer
Use batting tape to join quilt edges by fusing it between two batting pieces, then machine or hand quilt through the seam without added bulk or gumming.
Why batting tape works for quilt edges
Batting tape is a lightweight fusible stabilizer designed specifically for joining batting pieces. Unlike sewing the batting directly, tape creates a flat, secure seam that won't shift or create lumps under your quilt top. It's especially useful when you need to add a small piece of batting to extend an edge or patch a narrow area.
Choosing the right tape width
Most batting tapes come in 1-inch widths, which is ideal for standard quilt edges. The 1" Callie Del® Batting Tape works well for both machine and hand quilting because it's soft enough to needle through without resistance. If your project has very narrow seam allowances, you can trim the tape slightly, but avoid going narrower than ½ inch to ensure a secure bond.
How to apply batting tape to quilt edges
- Prepare the batting edges: Butt the two batting pieces together so their edges touch without overlapping. Trim any fuzzy or uneven fibers so the seam is clean. Place the tape centered over the seam line on one side of the batting. Do not overlap the batting pieces—butting them flat prevents a ridge.
- Fuse the tape in place: Set your iron to a medium heat (wool or cotton setting) without steam. Press the tape firmly for 3–5 seconds, moving the iron along the tape without sliding. Lift and press again until the tape is fully bonded to the batting. Avoid sliding the iron—it can shift the tape or batting edges.
- Check the bond before quilting: Gently peel a corner of the tape. If it lifts easily, press again with more heat or pressure. Once bonded, the seam should feel as flexible as the surrounding batting. A weak bond will cause the seam to separate during quilting—test before you proceed.
- Quilt through the taped seam: Machine or hand quilt as usual. The tape is soft enough to needle through without resistance, and it won't gum up your needle or add bulk. Stitch within ¼ inch of the seam line for best stability. If you feel resistance, check needle size—a 75/11 or 80/12 sharp works best.
