Quick answer

Place a Boveda humidity pack inside your humidor or stash bag to automatically maintain your target humidity level. Choose the pack's RH% based on your storage goals and replace it when it feels stiff.

Why Boveda packs work for cigar storage

Boveda packs are a two-way humidity control system. Unlike a dry sponge that only adds moisture, they both release and absorb water vapor to hold a precise relative humidity (RH) inside your container. This prevents cigars from drying out or becoming too damp and prone to mold.

They are available in several RH levels: 58%, 62%, 65%, 69%, 72%, and a special 84% for seasoning a new humidor. For most cigar storage, 62-69% is the sweet spot. The right choice depends on your climate and personal preference.

When to choose a different RH level

A 62% pack is ideal if you live in a humid environment or store cigars for long-term aging. It reduces the risk of mold and allows the cigar to burn more evenly. The 65% and 69% packs work well for everyday smoking and are the most popular choices. If you notice your cigars are too dry, step up 3% at a time. If they are too moist, step down.

The 58% pack is typically used for pipe tobacco or short-term storage. The 72% pack is best only for very dry climates or for cigars you plan to smoke within a few weeks. Avoid using 72% in a sealed container in a warm room.

How to use Boveda packs step by step

  1. Choose your target humidity: Select a Boveda pack with the RH level that matches your storage goal. For most cigar smokers, 65% or 69% is a safe starting point. If you are unsure, start with 65% and adjust after 2 weeks.
  2. Place the pack in your humidor or stash bag: Open your container and lay the Boveda pack inside, away from direct contact with the cigars if possible. The pack works by air circulation, so it does not need to touch the cigars. Do not put the pack in a sealed plastic bag inside the humidor—it needs open air to work.
  3. Seal the container and wait 24–48 hours: Close the lid or zipper tightly. Let the pack stabilize the humidity. Do not open the container repeatedly during this period. Opening the lid every hour will slow down the process. Check once after 24 hours.
  4. Monitor and replace when stiff: Over time, the pack will absorb excess moisture or release its own. When the pack feels hard and crumbly, it is depleted. Replace it with a fresh one. A pack in a properly sealed container typically lasts 2–4 months. In a leaky container it may only last weeks.
