Quick answer

The Freeform Filter Adapter lets you mount any Prism Lens FX filter via 77mm, 82mm, or 90mm threads and a 1/4-20 base hole, giving you flexible positioning in front of your lens for video work.

Why use a mountable adapter for video

Handheld filters give you creative control but can be tiring and inconsistent during long takes. A mountable adapter like the Freeform Filter Adapter locks your chosen FX filter in place, freeing your hands to adjust camera settings or follow action.

The 1/4-20 threaded hole at the base is key—it lets you attach the adapter to a rod system, a small arm, or even a lightweight tripod mount. That means you can position the filter exactly where you want it without holding it.

How to set up the Freeform Filter Adapter for video

  1. Choose your filter and thread size: Select the Prism Lens FX filter you want to use. The Freeform Filter Adapter has three thread sizes—77mm, 82mm, and 90mm. Match the thread on the adapter to the filter's rear thread. If your filter has a different thread, you may need a step-up or step-down ring (not included). Check your filter's thread size before attaching. Using the wrong thread can cross-thread and damage both parts.
  2. Attach the filter to the adapter: Screw the filter onto the chosen thread of the Freeform Filter Adapter. Turn gently until snug—do not overtighten. The filter should sit flush against the adapter face. Overtightening can warp the adapter ring or crack the filter glass. Hand-tighten only.
  3. Mount the adapter to your rig: Use the 1/4-20 threaded hole at the base of the adapter to attach it to a rod clamp, a small arm, or a lightweight tripod head. If you are using a handle or pro arm (sold separately), screw it in and position the assembly in front of your lens. Make sure the adapter is securely fastened before recording. A loose mount will cause filter wobble and ruin your shot.
  4. Position the filter in front of your lens: Slide the arm or rod so the filter is centered over the lens and at the distance that gives you the desired effect. For most prism effects, 0.5–2 inches from the front element works well. Lock the arm in place. If the filter is too close, you may see vignetting. Too far, and the effect may become too diffuse. Test a few distances before your take.
  5. Check your framing and focus: Look through your viewfinder or monitor. Adjust the filter angle by rotating the adapter on the arm. Fine-tune the filter distance until you see the light effect you want. Lock all adjustments. With the filter mounted, your autofocus may struggle. Switch to manual focus and set it before rolling.
