Quick answer

Use the Paterson agitator rod to gently rotate the film reel inside the tank, ensuring fresh developer reaches every part of the film for even, streak-free negatives.

Why Agitation Matters for Even Development

Without proper agitation, developer chemicals can stagnate around the film, causing uneven density, bromide drag, or streaks. The Paterson agitator rod solves this by letting you rotate the reel without opening the tank, keeping chemicals moving consistently.

The key is to use a gentle, rhythmic motion—overly vigorous agitation can cause surge marks, while too little leads to underdeveloped edges.

How to Use the Paterson Agitator Rod

  1. Load the reel onto the agitator rod: Slide the film reel onto the center column of the Paterson tank. Insert the agitator rod into the reel's center spindle until it clicks into place. The rod should turn freely without wobbling. Make sure the rod is fully seated—if it's loose, the reel won't rotate evenly.
  2. Pour in developer and start timing: Pour the developer into the tank through the light trap lid. Immediately start your timer. Grip the top of the agitator rod and begin rotating the reel continuously for the first 30 seconds at about one full turn every 2 seconds. Don't lift the rod during rotation—you might dislodge the reel and cause uneven coverage.
  3. Agitate for 5 seconds every 30 seconds: After the initial 30 seconds, agitate for 5 seconds at the start of each subsequent 30-second interval. Use a smooth, consistent twist—not a jerky motion. Invert the tank if your recipe calls for it, but the rod alone is sufficient for most rotary agitation. Over-agitation can introduce air bubbles; under-agitation leads to uneven density. Stick to the rhythm.
  4. Finish development and rinse: When the timer ends, remove the lid, lift the agitator rod with the reel attached, and pour out the developer. Rinse with water or stop bath as usual. The rod makes it easy to handle the reel without touching the film surface. Clean the agitator rod after each use—residue can cause scratches on your next roll.
