Quick answer
Use Pro Acryl Wash in Flesh straight from the bottle as a shade over a flesh base coat, or thin it as a filter to blend highlights and shadows for natural miniature skin tones.
Why use a wash instead of layering paints?
A wash flows into recesses and leaves pigment on raised areas, creating a smooth transition from highlight to shadow in one coat. This saves time compared to building up multiple thin layers of opaque paint.
When to thin vs. use straight
Use Pro Acryl Wash straight from the bottle when you want a consistent shade over the entire flesh area. Thin it with water (roughly 1:1) when you need a light filter that tints the surface without obscuring the layers underneath.
How to apply Pro Acryl Wash for flesh tones
- Prepare your base coat: Paint the miniature's skin areas with an opaque flesh-colored paint (e.g., Pro Acryl Flesh) and let it dry completely. The wash works best over a solid, even base. If the base coat is patchy, the wash will make unevenness more visible.
- Load your brush and wick off excess: Dip a clean brush into the Pro Acryl Wash – Flesh, then touch the tip to a paper towel to remove most of the liquid. The brush should be damp, not dripping. Too much liquid will pool and create tide marks; too little won't flow into recesses.
- Apply the wash to the skin area: Gently stroke the wash over the flesh areas, letting it settle into creases and shadows. Work one section at a time so the wash stays wet and blends. Avoid going back over a drying wash—it will lift the pigment and ruin the gradient.
- Let it dry and assess: Allow the wash to dry completely (2–3 minutes). The matte finish will settle into a soft gradient. If you want deeper shadows, apply a second thin coat only to the recesses. Drying time may vary by humidity; wait until the surface is completely matte before adding another layer.
