Quick answer

Attach the Flathook Carry Strap to the reinforced loops on your Peak Design Ultralight Packing Cubes to carry heavy gear securely. The strap's flat hooks grip the fabric loops without adding bulk.

Why the Flathook Carry Strap works for heavy gear

The Flathook Carry Strap is designed with flat, low-profile hooks that clip directly into the webbing loops on Peak Design's Ultralight Packing Cubes. This connection is surprisingly strong for its size — the strap can handle the weight of a camera body, lens, or other dense equipment when the cube is packed tightly.

Because the strap is adjustable from 82 cm to 154 cm, you can wear it as a shoulder sling or shorten it into a hand-carry loop. The main trade-off is that the flat hooks work best with reinforced fabric loops; they are not meant for D-rings or thin keychain loops.

How to attach the Flathook Carry Strap to your packing cube

  1. Locate the reinforced webbing loops on your cube: Open your Ultralight Packing Cube and find the two parallel webbing loops sewn into the top seam. These are the only attachment points rated for carrying weight. Do not clip into the zipper pulls or corner fabric loops — those are not load-bearing.
  2. Clip one flat hook into each loop: Press the spring-loaded gate on the Flathook and slide it over the webbing loop. Ensure the hook is fully seated and the gate snaps closed. Repeat for the second hook on the opposite loop. Check that both hooks face the same direction so the strap lies flat against the cube.
  3. Adjust the strap length for your carry style: Slide the adjuster buckle to shorten the strap for a hand loop (around 82 cm) or lengthen it for a shoulder sling (up to 154 cm). For heavy gear, a shorter length keeps the load closer to your body and reduces swing. Always test the length with the cube empty before loading gear — it is harder to adjust once the cube is full.
  4. Load the cube and test the connection: Place your camera gear inside the cube, zip it closed, and lift the strap gently. Listen for any clicking or slipping. The strap should hold firm with no movement at the hooks. If the strap feels loose, remove the cube and re-seat both hooks — one may have partially unclipped during loading.
