Step-by-step washing routine
- Pre-treat stains immediately: Rinse fresh stains under cool running water, then rub a drop of mild liquid detergent into the spot. Let it sit for 5 minutes before washing. Do not use bleach or stain removers with optical brighteners – they can yellow organic cotton over time.
- Set the machine to a gentle cycle: Select a delicate or hand-wash cycle with warm water (30–40°C / 86–104°F). High heat can shrink muslin and weaken the GOTS certification's fiber integrity. Always zip or button any laundry bags if washing with other items – rough zippers or hooks can snag the cloths.
- Choose the right detergent: Use a liquid detergent labeled for sensitive skin or baby clothes – preferably one without enzymes, fabric softeners, or perfumes. Powdered detergents may not dissolve fully in cooler water and leave residue. Skip fabric softener entirely – it coats organic cotton fibers, reducing absorbency and making cloths feel waxy.
- Dry with low heat or air: Tumble dry on low heat until slightly damp, then remove and lay flat to finish air drying. Over-drying on high heat stiffens muslin and can shrink the cloths unevenly. If you air dry from wet, shake each cloth out before hanging to reduce wrinkles and maintain the soft, fluffy texture.
- Store loosely folded: Once fully dry, fold cloths loosely and store in a dry, ventilated drawer or basket. Avoid stacking heavy items on top – compression can flatten the muslin loops and make them feel less soft. Rotate your cloths so each set gets equal use – this prevents one pack from becoming overly worn while others stay stiff.
