Quick answer
Mega Emboar ex 035 is a high-risk, high-reward card that can deal massive damage but also hurts itself, making it a niche choice for competitive decks that can manage its self-damage.
Understanding the self-damage trade-off
Mega Emboar ex's Crimson Blast attack deals 320 damage, enough to knock out many Pokémon ex and VSTAR in one hit. However, it also deals 60 damage to itself. This self-damage can be managed with healing cards like Potion or recovery abilities, but it means the card is vulnerable to being knocked out by an opponent's attack if not healed quickly.
Deck building considerations
Because Mega Emboar ex requires Fire, Fire, and Colorless energy, it fits best in Fire-type energy acceleration decks. Cards like Welder or Kiawe can help power it up quickly. Its 380 HP is high, but the self-damage makes it susceptible to being finished off by a follow-up attack. You'll need to include healing or switching options to keep it on the field.
Frequently asked questions
Is Mega Emboar ex 035 legal in standard tournaments?
Mega Emboar ex is from a promo set, so its legality depends on the current rotation. Check the official Pokémon TCG tournament rules for the latest list of legal expansions.
How does its self-damage affect gameplay?
Each time you use Crimson Blast, Mega Emboar ex takes 60 damage. Over two attacks it takes 120 damage, which can be healed with cards like Potion or Marnie's Pride, but leaves it vulnerable to being knocked out by an opponent's attack. Plan to include healing cards in your deck to offset the self-damage.
What is the card's value as a collector's item?
As a promo card from the ME Mega Evolution set, its value is modest at around $0.40 catalog price. It's more of a budget option for players than a high-value collectible.
