If you prefer a full new scenario with a dedicated board and god cards, Santorini: Riddle of the Sphinx offers a richer, more thematic expansion. Choose based on whether you want modular variety or a complete new experience.

Santorini's elegant base game already offers endless tactical possibilities with its god powers and worker placement. But when you're ready to expand, Roxley Games provides several paths: a card pack bundle that adds new god cards, and standalone expansions like Riddle of the Sphinx that introduce a whole new scenario. Understanding the differences helps you pick the right add-on without overspending.

This comparison focuses on the Santorini Card Pack Bundle and Santorini: Riddle of the Sphinx, two popular ways to enhance your games. We'll weigh their trade-offs so you can decide which fits your group's style and collection goals.

What the Santorini Card Pack Bundle Offers

The Santorini Card Pack Bundle is a collection of additional god power cards that you shuffle into the base game's deck. Each card introduces a new asymmetric ability, giving players fresh strategic choices without altering the core rules. This modular approach means you can mix and match cards to create endless combinations, increasing replayability significantly.

Because the bundle is card-only, it's portable and easy to store. You can integrate it with the base game or even combine it with other expansions that use the same god card system. The trade-off is that it doesn't provide new boards or components; the visual and thematic variety comes solely from the god powers themselves.

  • Check that the cards are compatible with your edition of Santorini; the bundle is designed for the standard game.
  • Consider sleeving the cards to protect them during frequent shuffling.

What Santorini: Riddle of the Sphinx Adds

Santorini: Riddle of the Sphinx is a full expansion that introduces a new game board, a Sphinx figure, and a unique scenario. It adds a puzzle-like layer where players solve riddles to gain advantages, shifting the focus from pure worker placement to a more thematic and cooperative-competitive experience. This expansion is ideal for players who want a fresh challenge beyond the base game's god powers.

The trade-off is that this expansion is a separate board game product, meaning it requires more table space and a higher investment. It also may not be compatible with all god cards from the base game, so you'll need to check the rules for integration. However, for those who enjoy a narrative twist, Riddle of the Sphinx delivers a memorable experience.

  • If you own the acrylic tokens accessory, they can enhance the visual appeal of the Sphinx expansion.
  • Set aside extra time to learn the new riddle mechanics before your first play.

Trade-offs at a glance

  • Variety vs. Novelty: The Card Pack Bundle gives you hundreds of new god powers to mix into the base game, creating endless combinations. Riddle of the Sphinx offers a single, but deeply thematic new scenario. Choose the bundle for long-term variety, or the Sphinx for a unique story.
  • Cost vs. Components: The bundle is priced at $38.94 but only contains cards. Riddle of the Sphinx is $30 and includes a new board and figure, offering more physical content per dollar. If you want more physical components, the Sphinx expansion delivers more for less.
  • Complexity vs. Accessibility: Card pack additions are easy to integrate and teach. Riddle of the Sphinx adds new rules for riddles and a different win condition, which may be more complex for casual groups. For a quick and easy expansion, choose the bundle; for a deeper challenge, choose the Sphinx.
