Quick answer

Solar panels are essential for off-grid charging; AOV technology is a power-saving feature that extends battery life. Neither replaces the other.

Why solar panels matter first

A solar panel is your camera's primary source of power when there's no wired connection. Without it, the battery drains and the camera stops working. Products like the Defender Solar Powered 4K AI Guard Ultra-Charge PTZ Security Camera rely on solar panels for continuous, off-grid protection. The panel itself is what converts sunlight into electricity to recharge the battery.

AOV technology helps, but isn't a substitute

AOV (Always-On Video) is a power management technique that reduces energy consumption during standby or low-activity periods. It helps the battery last longer between charges, but it cannot generate electricity. If the solar panel fails to charge the battery (e.g., during prolonged overcast weather), AOV alone won't keep the camera running.

The verdicts

  • Claim: AOV technology lets you skip the solar panel: False. AOV reduces power consumption but cannot generate electricity. The solar panel remains necessary for recharging the battery.
  • Claim: A bigger solar panel always means more runtime: Partially true, but panel efficiency and sunlight hours matter more than size alone. The Defender model uses a dedicated solar panel designed to match its power needs.
  • Claim: AOV and solar panels work independently: False. They work together: the solar panel charges the battery, and AOV helps the battery last longer between charges. One without the other limits performance. Check both the solar panel rating and the camera's power-saving features before buying.
