The Super7 Super Cyborg line has become a favorite among collectors who appreciate intricate design and a nod to retro aesthetics. Among the standout releases, the Transformers Super Cyborg Soundwave Clear edition has generated significant buzz. This review dives into the details of this unique figure, offering a collector's perspective on its design, build quality, and overall appeal.
As a limited clear variant, this Soundwave stands out not only for its transparency but also for the engineering that brings the iconic Decepticon communications officer to life. Whether you're a longtime Transformers fan or a newcomer to Super7's offerings, understanding what this figure brings to the table is essential before adding it to your collection.
Unboxing and First Impressions
The packaging of the Super Cyborg Soundwave Clear is immediately striking. The clear window box showcases the figure's transparent body, making it a display piece right out of the box. The front features vibrant artwork that harkens back to the original G1 cartoon, while the back displays the figure in various poses, hinting at its articulation.
Upon opening, the figure is securely held in place with plastic ties, and the accessories are neatly arranged in a separate tray. The first thing you notice is the weight of the figure—it feels substantial, indicating high-quality materials. The clear plastic has a slight blue tint, which adds a cool, icy aesthetic that is both modern and nostalgic.
- Packaging is collector-friendly with a clear window and minimal waste.
- The figure includes a variety of accessories, including alternate hands and a laser gun.
- The clear plastic has a subtle blue tint that enhances the overall look.
Design and Sculpt Details
The Super Cyborg Soundwave Clear is a masterpiece of design. The sculpt captures the blocky, angular look of the original G1 Soundwave, but with modern precision. Every panel line, rivet, and mechanical detail is faithfully reproduced, and the clear plastic allows you to see the intricate internal structure, which is a unique twist.
The figure stands about 7 inches tall, making it a commanding presence on any shelf. The clear material is not entirely see-through; it has a frosted quality in certain areas, which gives it depth and prevents it from looking cheap. The paint applications are minimal but effective, with silver accents on the chest and eyes that pop against the translucent body.
- The sculpt is highly detailed, reflecting the G1 cartoon model.
- The clear plastic has a frosted finish in some areas, adding depth.
- Paint apps are clean and precise, with no noticeable bleeding.
Articulation and Playability
For a figure that emphasizes display, the articulation is surprisingly robust. The Super Cyborg Soundwave Clear features over 20 points of articulation, including a ball-jointed neck, shoulders, elbows, wrists, hips, knees, and ankles. This allows for a wide range of poses, from dynamic action stances to more static, museum-style displays.
The joints are tight but not overly stiff, and they hold poses well without sagging. The clear plastic does not feel brittle, which is a common concern with transparent figures. The included accessories, such as the laser gun and alternate hands, swap easily and add to the playability. However, like most collectibles, this figure is best suited for display rather than rough play.
- Over 20 points of articulation for versatile posing.
- Joints are tight and hold poses effectively.
- Accessories are easy to swap and add value.
Comparing to Other Super7 Lines
Super7 offers several figure lines, each with its own appeal. The ReAction figures are known for their retro 3.75-inch scale and vintage charm, while the ULTIMATES! line offers larger, more articulated figures with extensive accessories. The Super Cyborg line sits in a unique niche, focusing on detailed mechanical designs with a transparent gimmick.
For collectors who enjoy the ReAction aesthetic, the Transformers ReAction Figure Wave 2 - Skyfire is a great companion piece, offering a classic look that contrasts with the modern Super Cyborg. On the other hand, if you're a fan of the G.I. Joe franchise, the G.I. Joe ReAction Figures Wave 1 - Cobra Commander brings that same retro vibe to another iconic villain. Both are excellent additions to a Super7 collection, but the Super Cyborg Soundwave Clear stands out for its unique material and engineering.
G.I. Joe ReAction Figures Wave 1 - Cobra Commander
- Super Cyborg offers a distinct aesthetic compared to ReAction and ULTIMATES!.
- Consider pairing with other Super7 lines for a diverse display.
- The clear variant is a limited edition, adding to its collectibility.
Value and Collectibility
As a clear variant, the Super Cyborg Soundwave is inherently more collectible than the standard release. Limited production runs and the eye-catching transparent design make it a sought-after piece for completists. The retail price is competitive for a figure of this size and quality, especially when compared to similar offerings from other companies.
When considering value, it's also worth looking at other Super7 products that offer a different take on beloved characters. For instance, the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers ReAction Figure Wave 2 - Scorpina provides a nostalgic trip for 90s kids, while the Peanuts Super Duper Plush Blind Box Wave 03 (Food) adds a fun, soft side to your collection. Each offers unique value, but the Super Cyborg Soundwave Clear is a centerpiece that commands attention.
- Limited clear variant increases long-term collectibility.
- Price is justified by the figure's size, detail, and accessories.
- A strong addition to any Transformers or Super7 collection.
In summary, the Super7 Transformers Super Cyborg Soundwave Clear is a remarkable figure that blends nostalgia with modern craftsmanship. Its transparent design, solid articulation, and high-quality materials make it a must-have for serious collectors. While it may not be for everyone due to its unique aesthetic, those who appreciate the artistry will find it a worthy investment. Whether you're a Transformers devotee or a Super7 enthusiast, this figure deserves a spot on your shelf.
