Quick answer
The Tokaido Solo Pack lets you play the peaceful journey of Tokaido alone using the Automa Factory system. This guide walks you through setup, turn flow, and scoring so you can start your solo trip right away.
Who needs this pack?
The Tokaido Solo Pack is designed for owners of older Tokaido editions (with Funforge on the box). If you have the Stonemaier Games version of Tokaido, the solo components are already included in your box — you do not need this pack.
This promo pack adds a solo rulebook, 23 cards, and an expansion player aid. It also includes the Stonemaier version's bonus components unrelated to solo play, but the main draw is the Automa Factory solo mode.
What to expect from the Automa Factory
The Automa Factory is a simple AI opponent that simulates a second traveler. It doesn't make strategic decisions — instead, it follows a fixed pattern based on cards you draw each turn. This keeps the game moving quickly and lets you focus on your own journey.
The solo mode uses the same Tokaido board and most of the same rules. The main difference is how the Automa moves and what it scores. You'll compete against the Automa's final score at the end of the game.
How to set up and play the Tokaido Solo Pack
- 1. Prepare your game: Set up the Tokaido board as usual for a 2-player game. Place your traveler figure at the starting space. Shuffle the solo deck and place it face down near the board. Common mistake: Forgetting to remove the second traveler's figure and cards. The Automa does not use a physical figure — it only uses the solo deck.
- 2. Understand the turn order: You and the Automa alternate turns. On your turn, move your traveler and take the action at the space you land on (encounter, panorama, hot spring, etc.). On the Automa's turn, draw the top card from the solo deck and follow its instructions — it will move the Automa to a specific space type and score points. Checkpoint: The Automa never blocks spaces. If its card directs it to a space that is already occupied, it skips to the next available space of the same type.
- 3. Score the Automa's points: Each solo card tells you how many points the Automa earns for that action. Keep a running total on a separate sheet of paper or with tokens. The Automa does not collect encounter cards, panoramas, or hot spring bonuses — it only scores the points listed on the card. Common mistake: Accidentally giving the Automa encounter card benefits. The solo deck replaces all encounter, panorama, and hot spring effects for the Automa.
- 4. End the game and compare scores: The game ends when either you or the Automa would take the last space on the board (the final inn). At that point, finish the current round so both players have had an equal number of turns. Add up your score from encounters, panoramas, hot springs, and coins. Compare it to the Automa's total from the solo cards. Highest score wins. Checkpoint: The Automa does not receive a bonus for arriving at the final inn first. Only your score matters for the win condition.
