Quick answer
The Composer Pro II body only lets you build a custom lens system by swapping optics yourself. Start with the body, choose an optic that matches your focal length and effect, then mount and adjust the tilt-swivel mechanism for precise selective focus.
Why start with the body only?
Buying the Composer Pro II body without an included optic gives you the freedom to pick exactly the focal length and effect you want. Instead of paying for a bundled optic you may not use, you invest in the tilt-swivel mechanism and then add optics one at a time as your creative needs grow.
The body itself handles all the tilting and swiveling that moves the area of focus. Since every Lensbaby optic fits the Composer Pro II, you can switch between a wide-angle Sweet 35, a portrait-friendly Sweet 80, or a creative Twist 60 without buying a new lens body each time.
What you need before you start
You will need the Composer Pro II body, at least one compatible optic, and a camera with the correct mount option for your system (Canon EF, Nikon F, Sony E, etc.). The body does not include an optic, so have your chosen optic ready before you begin.
Work in a clean, dust-free area. The optic bay is open when no optic is installed, and dust on the internal surfaces can show up in your images.
How to set up and use the Composer Pro II body only
- 1. Mount the body to your camera: Align the mount on the Composer Pro II body with your camera's lens mount (the mount option you selected at purchase). Rotate gently until it clicks into place. Do not force it. Common mistake: using the wrong mount type. Verify your camera's mount before ordering.
- 2. Install your chosen optic: Hold the Composer Pro II body with the front opening facing you. Insert the optic into the bay, aligning the small notch on the optic with the slot inside the body. Push gently until you hear a soft click, indicating the optic is locked. Checkpoint: the optic should sit flush with the body rim. If it wobbles, remove and re-seat it.
- 3. Adjust the tilt and swivel: Grasp the front ring of the body and tilt or swivel it in any direction. The area of sharp focus moves opposite to your tilt direction. Use the locking screws on the side to hold a specific tilt angle if needed. Common mistake: over-tilting, which can cause vignetting. Start with a slight tilt and increase gradually.
- 4. Focus and shoot: Look through your viewfinder or live view. Move the tilt to place the sharp focus area exactly where you want it. Use your camera's focus peaking or magnified view for precision. Take a test shot and review the selective focus effect. Checkpoint: if the image is soft everywhere, you may have tilted too far or the optic may not be fully seated.
- 5. Swap optics for different effects: To change optics, press the small release button near the front of the body and gently pull the optic out. Insert a different optic following step 2. The body remembers no settings, so each swap is a fresh start. Common mistake: pulling the optic without pressing the release button, which can damage the locking mechanism.
